They could write it in neon across the sky... .: Unapologetic .: The Loft :. DO YOU KNOW BRIAN KINNEY?: Brian Kinney

Brian Kinney

Brian is the confident, 30-something advertising executive, who has it all: money, sex and loving friends. He uses his unapologetic and outspoken demeanor to mask feelings of insecurity, loss and isolation. He cares a lot about his friends, although he doesn't show it. He can only find true solace in the chaste arms of his friends Michael and Lindsay.
Through out the show, Brian is always said to be someone who does what he wants, when he wants, who he wants, with any excuses or appologies. And that´s true. Brian isn't one to be shy about things, he is very verbal when it comes to something that is on his mind, well...somethings. He is also very honest, so honest it is brutal. Brian isn´t one who commits to someone easily, after all he´s one of Pittsburg's biggest party boys. A few of Brian's fav. hang outs are: Woody's, Babylon, and of course, the Baths. Brian can be found cruising Liberty Ave. looking for the latest hottie.

"I'm the most fabulous fag in Pittsburg. That is, if it's possible to be fabulous in Pittsburg"

"the love child of James Dean and Ayn Rand"

"What is it with Brian Kinney?"
"He doesn't give a shit"

“There’s only two kinds of straight people in this world: the ones that hate you to your face and the ones that hate you behind your back.”

Do anything, say anything, fuck anything. No excuses, no apologies, no regrets"

what’s wrong with here?”
“I’ve had everyone here

"So are you coming or going? Or coming and the going? Or coming and staying?"

I don't believe in love, I believe in fucking. It's honest, it's efficient--you get in and out with a maximum of pleasure and a minimum of bullshit.”

"Well, there's no predicting! Oops... I said dick, didn't I?"

"Sweet dreams, sonny boy, first night on earth..."

"They could write it in neon across the sky... FAGGOT!!! "

Brian's family:

Brian is the youngest of his family, he has an older sister named Claire, who has 2 annoying kids.

Brian's mother (Joannie Kinney) and father (Jack Kinney) don't get along too great, which several times Brian admits/jokes that his father considers himself a "lady's man", meaning that hisfather is/was unfaithful to his mother. Brian's mother is a lady who seems to have always turned the other way at the things going on around her. And neither of his parents knows that he is gay. And when he is told by his father that his father is dying, with advice from Debbie, Brian decides to tell his father, who isn't too happy to hear the news. At the funeral, when the sharing of Jack's life, Jack is Brian's dad, Brian states that his father didn't really want him, and his mother didn't give any notion that what was said wasn't true.

"If I have spend eternity of eternities burning in hell, its better than spending one good day in heaven with you! "

"you and me, we're a lot alike, we weren't meant to settle down"

Gus (Sonny Boy)

Brian is the father of Lindsey Petersen's son, Gus, whom was suppose to be Lindsey and Melanie's son, but Brian didn't really feel that he should give uphis parently rights. After all, Brian barely had a father, so he wanted Gus tohave one. But finally, Brian reliquishes his rights to Melanie so she may adopt Gus as her child. Brian did that so Gus will have two parents that love each other.

"Gus... It's a good butch name!"

Brian's Friends:

Michael

Brian met Michael when they were both 14 years old, and he could see the smaller boy was totally infatuated with him. Brian had feelings for Michael too... not that he was ever good at showing his feelings. Except for a brief, unfinished, adolescent sexual encounter, Brian never had sex with Michael — not that he didn't want to. They came close, though. Brian didn't want to let anything — especially sex — get in the way of their friendship. Sometimes Brian can be a little too protective of Michael, and sometimes Brian just wants to keep Michael for himself.
No matter what happens, the two friends are always there for each other.

"I love you, Mikey... always have, always will"

Justin

Brian meets Justin in episode one, from then on Brian kind of thought of Justin as a pest, he even tells Justin that what happened between them, was nothing more then sex. And he repeatedly tells Justin that he does not love him, and he keeps reminding Justin that he doesn't do boyfriends. But beneath it all, Brian does feel strongly for Justin. Most of which comes out with, whenever Justin is in trouble, needs Brian's help, or just needs Brian, Brian is always there.

Justin: "Being mean to me has never really worked, you should try another tactic"

Brian: "what are you doing?"

Justin: "I'm killing you with kindness, it's proved to be a highly effective technique!

Debbie: "you think you got everybody fooled, don't you? Well, not me, honey, I've known you too long and regretably too well. And no matter how hard you try to deny it, I can tell you care as much about him as he cares about you, only you don't have the big cohones to say it!"

Brian: "Oh maybe I can borrow yours..."

Debbie: "Well, whatever it takes... to admit that you love him, despite all your efforts to never let another heart touch yours and that's assuming of course, that you have one... that little persistant kid had somahow got under the wire... and that's what's happened, huh? Admit the truth, you love him, don't you?... I thought so! Then tell him, tell him what you could never say to Michael"

Brian: "You were right, the reason I took you in was because you got a bash in the head, but that's not the reason I want you to stay, but don't get the idea that we are a couple, cuz we are not. We're not like fucking straight people... I'm fucking because that's what I want, and when I come home, I'll also be doing exactly what I wanna do: coming home to you"

Justin: "Ok, I want some things too: you can fuck whoever you want, as long as it's not twice - same for me - and no names or numbers exchanged. And you always come home. And you don't kiss anyone in the mouth but me."

"I want you safe. I want you around for a long time."

Lindsay:
Brian and Lindsay met in college, in a writing class, he saw it as an easy grade, she saw it as a way to meet Chicks. Lindsay has a way with Brian, she is about the only other one other then Micheal who really understands Brian. And Lindsay even trusted and loves Brian a lot to ask him to be the father of her baby. Conflicts always araise in the show about who matters more to Lindsey, her lover Melanie or her best friend Brian. Melanie complains that Lindsay favors Brian over her, and sometimes, that is true. Lindsay even got Brian to see Justin a few times. After Gus was born, Lindsey makes a statement implying that she and Brian have been together, sexually, when they were in school.

Melanie

Brian didn't get along with Melanie from the start. To him, she was just another pain-in-the-ass example of political correctness. Not only that but she interfered with his relationship with Lindsay — at least that's how he looked at it. There was that time when he actually needed Melanie, when he was sued him for sexual harassment. Melanie did a great job. In fact, for a split second, he almost liked her. Of course the true test would come later, when Lindsay and Melanie broke up. The real thing that made Brian have a change of heart was when Lindsay was going to marry a french guy, Guillaume. Melanie wasn't the only one freaking over that one. Brian didn't want that guy adoptin his son ...even Melanie was a better option than that. So, without a lot of fanfare, Brian signed over his legal rights to Gus, so Melanie could go ahead with the adoption. And at the same time he told the two gals to get the hell over all the dyke-drama and get back together. In the end, whatever his opinion of Melanie, he knew she would be a good mother to Gus and a good partner to Lindsay. So from that point on, Brian and Melanie weren't exactly "best friends" but the fire had reached a manageable size.

Ted

Brian didn't hate Ted when they first met...he just barely noticed him at all. But when he was forced to get to know him because of their mutual friendship with Michael...he still didn't see much there. Ted was everything Brian wasn't. Ted was older than Brian, not a pretty boy, believed in true love and played the victim in the bars instead of the predator. The real weird thing was when Brian actually called Ted to hang out. Never happened before. Oh, it wasn't that Brian saw the innate goodness in the boring exterior of his acquaintance...no way...it was mere use. Michael wasn't talking to him, and Brian needed a substitute Michael. He figured Ted would do better than a dead cat...but then again maybe not.

Brian: "Listen to me. Are you listening?"

Ted: "I'm listening."

Brian: "You may be a pathetic drug addict who's lost everything - your dignity, your livelihood, your lover, your good name, the respect and trust of everyone you know…"

Ted: "No one gives a pep talk like you, Bri."

Brian: "But there's one thing you haven't lost. You're still an accountant. That's who you are. Not even the lowest form of degradation can take that away from you."

Emmett

Brian and Emmett are sometimes left together when Micheal and Ted are working together. Just like with Ted, Brian's always mocking Emmett.

[Emmett] "What kind of homosexual are you?"

[Brian] "The kind that fucks men"

Other relationships:

Debbie:
Brian met Debbie when Michael dragged him home from school. Debbie was everything his mother wasn't. She's warm, funny and openly adored her son and her son's friends. Brian loved being there and would spend more time at Debbie's house than his own. But it wasn't all smooth sailing between Brian and Debbie. She knew Michael was in love with Brian from the first moment they met. And she told Brian that if he really cared about Michael he would let Michael go. Hearing stuff like that from Deb was hard. But Brian listened...a little too well. He forced Michael away, by destroying Michael's 30th birthday. At first Debbie didn't get it, but later she went back to Brian's and said she understood. If nothing else, Brian was glad Debbie understood. In the end, Brian loves Debbie... She's always there for the guys.

Jennifer:
Despite Jennifer's own reluctance to accept her son's sexuality, and specially his relationship with Brian, Brian soon started to admire her. He saw her as she was, a decent woman struggling to understand her son's very complex life. Brian knew one thing; she sure was a whole helluva lot better than his own mother.
After Justin was bashed, things between Brian and Jennifer fell apart. Jennifer blamed Justin's sexuality and love for Brian for the bashing. Brian, still respecting Jennifer, agreed to never see her son again...
Jennifer changes her mind about Brian seeing Justin. He might be the only path to Justin's recovery. She asks Brian to come back into Justin's life.
"I want you to take him. He won't let anyone touch him or near him, shows no emotions except on his rages"
"Want do you want me to do?"
"Touch him, help him being touched..."
"You want me to fuck him?"
"You're the one he trusts, if that's what it takes..."

I love Brian Kinney. I liked Justin, but I wasn't too sure about Justin and Brian at first. But I do like them together now. I love all the characters, but Brian is the best of them all. He has to be the most complex character in the series. He's witty, kind even though he doesn't want to admit it, he's just a great guy and even though he can be very blunt and honest about what he thinks, in the end he loves his friends and would do whatever it takes to make them happy. It's clear they mean the world to him, he's not as selfish as they say.
