Season 1 synopsis

Episode 101-103

After a night out at Babylon with Michael, Emmett and Ted, Brian picks up a cute guy named Justin for a night of fun, but afterwards coldly rebuffs Justin's attempts to see him again.
Michael takes a hunk home but is disappointed; he is grateful for a trip to the hospital with Brian after he learns that Lindsay and Melanie have had a baby boy, Gus. In the meantime, Michael stays in the closet at work, which causes some problems with an interested female colleague. Michael must also struggle with feelings of jealousy over Brian's relationship with Justin. Lindsay and Melanie have a bris (circumcision ceremony) for their new baby, which Brian decides to miss until Michael convinces him otherwise. Brian crashes the bris to put his parental foot down.
Justin, seeking to regain the attention of Brian, decides to get noticed at Babylon. Meanwhile, Brian's involvement as Gus’s father causes relationship strain between Lindsay and Melanie. Michael’s straight act is compromised when he runs into a co-worker in front of the gay bars. Also, Ted finally gets lucky with a guy whose advances he’s been denying - with devastating results.

Episode 104

Brain, Michael and Emmett swap stories of last night’s sexcapades – and it’s only after we’ve heard the details that we realize we’re in the cafeteria of the hospital where Ted lies in a drug-induced coma, his survival in question. While Ted’s friends confront the chill of this, Justin is hot from the memory of his triumph last night at Babylon (as seen in the pilot). At home, in the shower, he tries to scrub off the disco tattoo from his wrist while, unknown to him, his worried mom finds in his bedroom a sketchpad with drawings of naked boys in a locker room and a telltale name – BRIAN - written out hundreds of times.
Back at the hospital, the friends leave their sleeping comrade to go to work. Brian seems heartless, insulting Ted’s lack of drug knowledge and his foolishness for taking drugs at all with someone he didn’t know. No one can see out how he can be so cold at a time like this – but that’s Brian, or so they think. . . .
And back to Justin, at school, half attentive to an earnest teacher’s explication of THE GREAT GATSBY as a parable of American yearning, super-attentive to the sight of Christian, the good-looking jock who sits in front of him. Christian gets into a punching contest with a boy next to him and is given clean-up duty as punishment. Justin, surprisingly crafty, comes in to (artfully) “help”, and winds up giving the straight Christian a hand job.
Melanie, meanwhile, comes to visit Brian at his office, not in her capacity as pain in the ass but – a surprise – as the comatose Ted’s lawyer. Ted, it seems, has made a living will in which he has named Brian to be the one who decides whether to pull the plug if he should ever find himself in a situation – well, like the one he’s in. Melanie warned Ted about Brian’s turpitude and flakiness, but he named Brian anyway – and now Brian is left with a real problem: Will he accept what Ted asked of him? Why does a responsibility like this fall on him?
Back to Jennifer, Justin’s mother, who engineers a coveted trip to Niketown and uses the chance to bravely ask him if a) he’s gay and b) who’s Brian. Justin flips, unable to tell his mother the truth, and bolts from the car. Bravado on the dance floor is one thing....
At the same time, Michael gets some disturbing news from Ted’s mother, to whom he’s kindly brought food in the hospital. She’s planning to go to his apartment and get some things for him to have around when (she’s in denial) he wakes up. Denial or not, Michael hastily phones Emmett and tells him of a service they must perform for their friend. On his thirty-third birthday, a few months ago, his friends gave Ted thirty-three dildos. They have to collect them and all his porn before his mom gets there that evening.
Brian takes action, too. He goes to Lindsay and Melanie’s house to decline Ted’s living will request. Melanie uses this as an opportunity to express her deep contempt for Brian. Brian, afterwards, is joined by Lindsay, who sees the pain he’s in and hears his real question. All these machines and beeps attached to Ted tell us he’s alive, somewhere inside there. But how do you know you’re alive-really alive-when you’re just walking around, in non-extraordinary circumstances, just living your life? As the two old friends try to figure this one out, Justin, on his made course, convinces Daphne to help him find Brian. The worst has happened – Mom knows! - and only Brian, who in Justin’s eyes knows everything, will know how to help him and what to do. Daphne, hesitant but turned on by the adventure of it all, agrees to help.
It’s time now for the dildo hunt, at Ted’s place. Michael and Emmett find the dildos, and the porn, and something else: many pictures of Michael, indicating Ted’s secret feelings for him. As the two friends ponder what this might mean, the other two friends, Justin and Daphne, decide that the best way to find Brian is to find Debbie. The two teens wind up at her house and cause her to call her son Michael to come home and help figure this out.
While all this goes on Brian goes to the hospital where, believing himself alone, he speaks to the comatose Ted about the burden Ted has imposed upon him. But he hasn’t been totally alone, it turns out; a sexy male nurse has overheard it all and, as he and Brian fall into an intensive-care screwing session, Ted’s eyes open and he’s once more among the wakeful.
Back at Debbie’s house, a pissed-off Michael can’t figure out how Brian’s teenaged trick has wound up a squatter in his own mother’s house. Debbie and Vic are both puzzled and amused by the budding little drama queen. Brian finally shows up, bringing news of Ted’s recovery. Michael insists he go deal with Justin upstairs, and deal with him he does. It turns in to a furtive, hot little sexual encounter, which Michael first senses and then sees. Michael and Debbie wind up taking Justin home to his worried mother. The next day, Brian and Michael bring Ted home, Brian, in a moment alone with Ted, asks him why Ted chose him to be the plug-puller. “Because he’s a heartless shit,” Ted answers, never knowing the extent to which Brian has looked into his secret soul.

Episode 105

Michael stays late at work restocking shelves with Tracy, a sweet co-worker with a crush on him. Encouraged by his friends to stop leading her on and come out to her, Michael tries to, but chickens out -- and injures himself moving boxes. Michael visits a chiropractor and is later surprised when Dr. David asks him out to dinner, unaware that he was gay. The two have dinner, and despite their very different lifestyles begin to be charmed by one another -- which is why Michael is dumbfounded when Dr. David does not want to have sex with him at the end of the evening. Michael, sexually frustrated, heads to Babylon in search of a quickie.
Lindsay, tired of being the peacemaker between Brian and Melanie, makes Brian agree to come over for dinner in an attempt to unite the three parents of Gus. Meanwhile, Brian must get a very tough family-man client to sign with his advertising agency. The client refuses Brian’s invitations of business dinners until he coincidentally spots Brian at Pistol. The client, having seen Brian in a gay bar, suggests to Brian that instead of a business dinner, the two of them go to a club, where Brian is promised he will land the account in exchange for sexual favors. Brian must decide how far he’ll go, and what he’ll do, to land the account.
Jennifer, fed up with all her son’s lies, takes Justin to a counselor, but the incident only emphasizes the widening chasm between them. That evening Justin lies to get permission to leave the house, but Jennifer (led by Daphne) finds him at a gay bar. Justin, frightened, bolts, and Jennifer has lost her son yet again. After seeking advice from Debbie, Jennifer attempts to reclaim her son by being his friend. Justin goes along with it too, and it looks like their relationship is mending until Justin goes off with a young male Art Student. Jennifer knows her relationship with her son will never be the same.

Episode 106

Michael, still brooding over his failed date with the chiropractor, bemoans his fate to Brian while browsing at his favorite comic book store. Brian coaches him to try again. And so, Michael shows up at Dr. David’s and asks for a second chance. The doctor is more than happy to oblige and Michael later finds himself under David’s expert sexual care.
Justin, out with Daphne on Liberty Ave., spots the Lesbians and wrangles an invitation to the house. Brian shows up to visit Gus and finds Justin firmly entrenched. Lindsay is impressed by Justin’s artwork and invites him to participate in an art show/fundraiser at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center.
Ted, still recovering from his brush with death by overdose, has decided to leave the club scene forever. He coaxes Emmett into joining him for Date Bait, a computer monitored singles night at the Center. At Over 30 Night, Ted meets Roger, a sweet and slightly overweight chorus director. The two have a sweet, chaste date together, vowing to hold off sex for when they’re both ready.
When Michael introduces Dr. David to Brian, Brian makes a pass at him. This information seems to turn Michael on, leading to more romance with the doctor. Battle lines are soon drawn between Brian and David, each fighting to be more important in Michael’s life.
Everything comes together at the Community Center art show. Ted introduces Roger to his friends and after looking at the erotic pictures, the two decide “they’re ready” for sex. Dr. David gets an earful from Melanie about the history of Michael’s longing for Brian and the battle heats up. Jennifer sees a picture of Justin’s depicting a naked Brian. She realizes that her son is involved with an older man and is horrified.
Ted can’t go through with sex with Roger. Even though he’s everything Ted says he wants, he would rather continue to be rejected at Babylon by cute young things. Jennifer asks Debbie for information about Brian and confronts her son with questions. Debbie warns Brian that there may be trouble with Justin’s father.
Out at the clubs, Brian drugs Michael on the dance floor and ruins the evening for Dr. David. The war between them continues…

Episode 107

Justin gets his nipple pierced – and Michael gets a boyfriend.
Michael denies this, of course, stating that he and David are “just friends”. But, as Emmett says, the three ways you know you have a boyfriend are: He sends you flowers, he invites you away for the weekend, and your mother invites him to dinner. Which is exactly where they’re going tonight – to Debbie’s house.
As for Brian, he’s none too thrilled that Dr. David is taking up Mikey’s time, or that Michael keeps canceling plans with Brian. He’s not to playing second fiddle.
Meanwhile, Justin’s mother has told his father, Craig, that not only is Justin gay, but he’s been having a relationship with a 29-year-old man. Craig orders Justin to stop seeing this person, but Justin refuses. Furthermore, he feels betrayed by his mother who promised to keep all this to herself. Craig threatens to call the police and have Brian arrested. But Justin knows he won’t really do anything. Craig doesn’t want the world to know that his son is gay.
Things are faring better for Michael. David asks him to go away to the country for the weekend. This means that Michael has to cancel his plans to go to “The Miss Pitts Pageant” with Brian (a drag contest Emmett is entering). Brian acts as if it makes no difference to him – hopes he has a good time. And so Michael, nervous at the prospect of having to spend an entire weekend with someone, embarks on his first trip to the country with David.
Back in the city, Brian goes to the Miss Pitts Contest. He’s in a foul mood because Mikey’s screwed up his weekend. He leaves Babylon, gets into his car and is run off the road. Who was the asshole that nearly killed him? We see it’s Justin’s father.
The next day Michael calls Brian from the country to tell him what a great time he’s having, only to learn of Brian’s near fatal accident. Of course, it wouldn’t have happened had Michael been driving and they had been together, as planned.
Guilt-ridden, Michael insists he and David go back – now! David is not a happy camper.
In he meantime, Justin qets into a fight with Christian over his nipple ring and is sent to the Principal. When Justin’s father learns of this, he decides it would be better if Justin were sent away to school.
Melanie reluctantly gives in to her urges, seeking solace from her troubled relationship in the arms of another. When she guiltily confesses her infidelity to Lindsay, Lindsay asks Melanie to pack her things and go. Melanie has a touching good-bye with Gus, then quietly walks away front her home and her family.

Episode 108

It’s closing time at Babylon, and all our friends are gathered — Justin, too, who shares his parents’ threat to send him away to school, as if that might make a difference. Brian surprises Justin by saying it might he a good idea. And an even bigger surprise waits outside — Craig, Justin’s dad, who attacks Brian in a blind, foolish rage. He makes a threat to his son — come home now or never. Justin chooses the latter, and a humiliated Craig goes off. This encounter is rehashed with full adrenaline-pump by Justin at the Liberty Diner, but life intrudes, the unexpected and the unforeseen — Debbie, exhausted, collapses, as all rush to help.
Jennifer laces into her blustering macho husband. Does he want to drive their son away forever? Her attack only makes him take a harder line. They’re at an impasse, and it’s clear to her that if anything positive is to be done she’s going to have to do it.
Back at Debbie’s house, they’ve returned from the ER, where David has helped greatly. The truth emerges. Debbie has been working double shifts, to try to help pay off Vic’s pre-AIDS-cocktail credit card spree. He can’t go back to work, because he’d lose his disability insurance if he did. Michael has been in the dark about most of this, and of course feels terrible. What can he do? As they all prepare to leave, Justin tags along after Brian. Brian very grudgingly allows him one night’s shelter on his couch — an event the significance of which he will minimize to Michael the next morning when he drives him to work. Justin, meanwhile, shows up at school in last night’s stinky disco wear. He’s taunted with the usual sophisticated cries of “Hey, faggot!” — and then, to ice the cake, his mommy shows up. She wants him to come home, but he announces it will never happen.
And how’s Michael doing? Well, at work, he learns there’s a promotion to be had in the store. It would be great if he could get it, as he needs the extra money to help out at home. Tracy encourages him; in an alternate universe she’d make the perfect wife; it’s just unfortunate that he lives in this one. He lets his manager know he wants to be considered. The manager invites him to a small party he’s having and Michael - should feel free to bring his girlfriend. He asks Tracy, and feels awful about it, but he feels that he has no choice.
Jennifer shows up at Brian’s office. What else can she do? She’s got a knapsack full of her son’s stuff. The kid is on his hands for a while, until she can figure out what to do. How did this ever happen, Brian wonders? He goes home to find Justin has colonized his loft. Brian lays down the law, as he always seems to be doing with Justin, You have your life. I have mine. And I’m going out to get laid.
Brian goes Jeep shopping with Lindsay and Gus. He airs some of his conflicted feeling about the whole Justin situation. A smarmy salesman makes a few homophobic comments about another pair of shoppers, arid Brian, in response, test-drives a Jeep right through a plate glass window.
Michael shares some of what he’s been going through with David. We see the age, class, and experience difference between them. David feels the ruse with Tracy will catch up with Michael. Michael feels he has no choice. Unlike David, he doesn’t have money. He doesn’t have a profession. And his mother needs him. It’s a little harder for him to stand on principle, nice as that might be. Maybe someday...
Brian meanwhile, true to his word, picks up a hot guy at Babylon and brings him home for the necessary plowing. Justin is there to hopelessly complicate things. Brian kicks him out, and Justin goes. He winds up as a crasher on the lesbo couch. Lindsay, who’s gotten to know, appreciate and like this kid, calls Brian and says he really has to figure something out.
Michael learns he got his promotion. The only thing that clouds this event is his feelings of having been dishonest…
But there’s one person who has been honest — Justin — and he’s paying the price for it at school, where, while practicing with the track team, he’s taunted by the conflicted Christian. But, this time help — quite unexpected help — sweeps in. Brian! Come to save the day! Well, not exactly. He’s taking Justin home, to try to resolve this insanity once and for all-
But once he’s there the strangest things happen: his sympathy is stirred, and he sees that Justin cannot go back here, in this hate-filled and repressive place. At the end, at Babylon, he tells Michael that Justin’s presence in his life might turn out to be for more than just one night...

Episode 109

Michael, with Brian’s prompting, starts to ask David why he’s never been introduced to any of David’s friends. In response, and to prove he’s not ashamed of his Q-Mart-working younger lover, David arranges a dinner party to welcome Michael into his world. His gang of friends prepares Michael for the big night, coaching him on topics of conversation, etiquette, and the like. David’s friends are nice enough, but they can’t help but come off patronizing to this manager of a Q-Mart. After the party, Michael is ready to break off the relationship. Clearly, they are from two different worlds and Michael feels outclassed. David surprises Michael, however, by asking him to move in with him.
Baby Gus gets sick one night, sending Lindsay and Melanie into a panic. They rush the baby to an emergency room where the nurse doesn’t allow Melanie to go back to the examining room. Brian, as the father, is admitted immediately. Gus is fine the next day, but the issue of who is and who isn’t a parent is on the table. Lindsay and Melanie ask Brian to relinquish his parental rights so Melanie can petition for a second parent adoption. This was always the plan. Brian says sure, but after input from Justin, who is living in his apartment (“You can’t give up your son!), Michael (“You’re not a father, you never will be!”) and a visit to his own father, Brian says no. He won’t sign the papers.
Emmett has become addicted to the Internet, spending hours hiding behind his sexy screen name, PITTS9X6. When a cyber-buddy asks to meet in person, Emmett panics and deletes the name. Soon, he is being stalked by a mysterious hunk who follows him home. It’s PITTS. PITTS demands to know why Emmett has deleted him. “Nobody wanted me, they wanted you!” Emmett tells him. “Well,” PITTS says, “then we’ll, have to work on you.” PITTS coaches Emmett to be more aggressive sexually and to be more confident. He even takes him into his world, to a virtual chat room where screen names meet and have cyber-sex. PITTS accepts a date for Emmett with his cyber-buddy and the two hit it off. Both of them were pretending to be something they’re not, but they can indulge each other’s fantasies. At the end, Emmett says goodbye to his screen persona and thanks him for what he taught Emmett. That imaginary persona is and will always be a part of him.

Episode 110

Saturday morning and Michael and David are shopping on Liberty Avenue. After running into Emmett, David pops the question: Are we going to live together or not? Same morning, Melanie and Lindsay discuss finances. Since Lindsay’s maternity leave will soon be up, it looks like they will have to figure in the added expense of a nanny. And even though neither wants to, it looks like they will have to, once again, hit Brian up for money.
At the loft, Brian groggily wakes up to find Justin hanging out with Daphne. They are looking at all of ’s cool stuff when he storms out in frustration. Daphne and Justin discuss his sister Molly’s birthday party that afternoon. Despite the fact that he fears his father’s temper, Justin decides to go. When they leave, he forgets to set the alarm.
While having some pre-Babylon cocktails at Woody’s, the gang listens to Brian rant on about Justin and what a pain he is. Suddenly, Michael surprises the table with the news that David wants them to live together. The table erupts in screams as the focus shifts, for once, from Brian to Michael.
Meanwhile, at Molly’s birthday party: Craig, calm and rational now, explains to Justin that he can return to live with them if he agrees to live under their rules. Jennifer and Molly want him home, too - it’s just not a family without him. But Justin has embarked on a new life and acting like nothing has changed is simply not possible.
After a long night out, Brian arrives home with a trick only to find his place robbed. After summoning the cops, he angrily sends Justin out into the night streets. The next morning, while Brian is dealing with the robbery, Melanie and Lindsay drop by, but obviously it’s not a good time to ask for money. Michael comes over, too, but has to leave soon for a brunch with some of David’s old friends. It is Lindsay who asks, “Hey, where’s Justin?”
Justin has decided to run away to New York. He can’t live at home and he sure isn’t going back to ’s. At the Liberty Diner, he outlines his plan to Daphne; he will do whatever it takes, become a go-go boy if he has to, but he’s outta there. Daphne knows that Justin is a big drama queen, but this is the farthest he’s gone yet. At brunch with David’s friends, Michael has a disturbing vision of what being part of a set-in-their-ways gay couple looks like. When he imagines his own circle of friends witnessing this domesticity (in a fantasy sequence), he bolts.
Meanwhile, the perfect storm is brewing back at Melanie and Lindsay’s. Lindsay has taken ’s side one too many times and now Melanie is questioning what she is really getting out of this relationship - she is spending all this money, yet she has no real rights, parental or marital. Melanie is at her wit’s end and breaking up is not out of the question. Taking up his usual place at Woody’s Sunday afternoon Beer Bust, Michael once again brings up the pros and cons of moving in with David. Emmett and Ted, tired of Michael’s dithering, suggests Michael consult MYSTERIOUS MARILYN, a drag queen tarot card reader who has set up a table in the corner. Mysterious Marilyn, (in a contrasting fantasy sequence), offers up a horrific vision of single life if Michael and Brian don’t quit hanging out in bars chasing boys.
Breaking up the party, Daphne delivers the word that Justin has run away. This presents a real problem for Brian: If Justin’s father finds out where Justin has been living, he’ll press statutory rape charges. After a strange call from American Express about a questionable bill, Jennifer hunts down Debbie for information about her son, who furiously declares that “all you kids are my kids”and insists that Brian and Michael find Justin. Ted and Emmett are corralled into helping as well and suddenly it’s… ROAD TRIP!
Brian, Ted, Emmett and Michael take off in Brian’s jeep for New York. David is left behind, feeling left out and uncertain about his future with Michael. He heads over to Lindsay and Melanie’s for some compassion but is served only thin gruel: Kinney is a formidable foe, warns Melanie. She, better than any of them, knows this. Meanwhile, the boys on the road bond, united in friendship and purpose. Free from the restraints of home, they laugh over some silly road games, blasting music brought by designated DJ Emmett. A flat tire is expertly fixed, surprisingly, by Emmett, who tells a ghastly Southern Gothic tale from his youth, none of it true. The mood turns serious at a rest stop where Brian and Michael share their fears about the future.-Filled with renewed purpose, they cruise onto the New Jersey turnpike. At dawn, they are awed by the Manhattan skyline. Standing outside of Big Cup, they are also awed by THE WORLD FAMOUS MUSCLE BOYS OF CHELSEA… and Brian likes what he sees. Debbie calls Michael on his cell with the news that resourceful Justin has booked himself into the Royalton and the chase comes to its conclusion. Brian goes up to Justin’s hotel room and the two of them agree to resolve their complex, inappropriate relationship, but not without one last fling.
Once they are all safely home, DEBBIE and JENNIFER decide that Justin will go and live in Michael’s old room. (Michael’s protests fall on deaf ears.) After that’s all been arranged, Michael goes over to David’s to give him his decision about moving in. David has already guessed the answer: It’s no. Michael, after all the fun he had on the road, has decided that the good times are gonna roll on a bit…

Episode 111

Michael is free at last, having ended the relationship with Dr. David just in time for his thirtieth birthday. Although Brian is thrilled to have his friend single again, Debbie has concerns. Debbie attempts to talk some sense into her son, but he doesn’t want to hear it and she realizes there’s only one thing to do: go to Brian. So Debbie shows up at Brian’s loft and tells him he’s ruining Michael’s chance at happiness. Brian, with an unspoken plan in mind, decides to give Michael a birthday party he’ll never forget.
Meanwhile, Ted is scared when he sees someone he had unsafe sex with order HIV medication. Emmett holds his hand, suggesting that the two of them get tested together. The next day Ted is relieved when he gets his results over the phone. But Emmett is shattered when the doctor’s office leaves a message on his machine to come in. Emmett is convinced he is dying, but must hide his trauma as he leads Michael to his...
SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY!
Our characters converge at Brian’s loft to celebrate Michael’s thirtieth. Brian has even convinced David to show up – and he’s there with an expensive gift. But Brian’s gift (a very rare comic book Michael has been after) tops David’s. Emmett, who has maintained his happy face for as long as he can handle, excuses himself and, alone in the bathroom, makes a promise to God that he’ll never have sex again if his results come back negative. Then Tracy, the sweet checkout girl from Michael's tore who is infatuated with him and has no idea about his sexuality, shows up. Brian "outs" Michael in front of her. Tracy is crushed, and leaves in a hurry. The party quickly falls apart, with everyone horrified at Brian's cruel behavior, most a drunken Melanie who uses the opportunity to lash into him.
After the party, Michael goes home with David and asks for a second chance. They have fabulous sex. The next day, Debbie shows up at Brian’s loft to clean up from the party. She knows that Brian invited Tracy in order to push Michael away. Only the most extreme measure would finally sever the lifelong bond Michael has had with Brian. Brian, of course, would never admit he had to be cruel in order to be kind. Emmett shows up at the Doctor’s office to get his results; he finds out he’s negative and his check bounced, but is left having to make good on his promise to God. Our episode ends with Michael moving in with David as Emmett prepares for major changes in his lifestyle. And Brian’s cruel behavior leaves him all alone with no one to turn to. Except for Justin, who still loves and believe in Brian.

Episode 112

Brian is alone in his apartment, looking at the pictures and decorations left over from Michael’s birthday party. He gives Michael a call, but loses his nerve and hangs up. Michael knows Brian called, but resolutely doesn’t care — he’s going to be happy living with David. Looking for a friend, Brian calls up Ted to go to Woody’s. Ted is shocked —Brian’s never called him before.
At the gym, a hot gym bunny approaches Emmett. Ted is surprised to see him turn the hoftie down. Emmett reminds him about his promise to God if he got a negative HIV test.
Feeling shut out, Melanie confesses to Lindsay that she feels very alone in their relationship. Meanwhile at Woody’s, Brian realizes that Ted just isn’t a substitute for Michael. But Ted is having a great time. He picks up one of Brian’s rejects.
Michael moves in to David’s house and makes love with David, as Brian has meaningless sex in the back alley of Woody’s. Brian keeps looking for new people to hang out with and shows up at the lesbians’ house. They urge him, rather desperately, to call Michael.
At Q-Mart, Marley makes a gay joke. Michael stays quiet, but Tracy gets angry. Tracy tells Michael that she’s resigning. Later, Michael is able to convince Tracy to stay and apologizes for not telling the truth. Emmett meets a cute guy at the bar, Mall, who he shares his problems with. Matt brings Emmett to a See The Light meeting, a group for homosexuals to “convert” to straight lifestyles.
At the Liberty Diner, Brian is unusually friendly with Justin and they go home together. Michael unpacks his comic book memorabilia at David’s place. The next day, he finds David has moved his belongings into the closet and out of sight.
In bed, Brian confesses to Justin that he pushed Michael away on purpose. Justin decides it’s time for him to get involved. Brian begins spending more time with the lesbians and Gus than Melanie can handle. Lindsay confesses to Melanie that she expects too much from her. Justin tracks Michael down at his favorite comic book store. He gives Michael the comic book Brian got him for his birthday, and tells Michael why Brian drove him away.
Emmett begins to think the See The Light meeting makes sense for him. By Emmett’s second meeting, he tells the group he wants to “see the light” too.
At Babylon, Michael and Brian are reunited. Michael returns home to find that David has moved his Captain Astro gear back out into the open.

Episode 113

Brian catches the eye of Kip, an up-and-coming new employee at work. More importantly, Kip catches Brian’s eye, coming out to Brian and flirting with him. The two them end up having sex on Brian’s desk.
Elsewhere, Melanie and Lindsay host a baby shower for a friend, wilting in the white-hot spotlight forced on them as the local role models for their social circle. Only they know that all is not well in paradise, and Melanie strikes up a friendship with Marianne, an attentive woman who seems ready to provide the support and comfort that Lindsay will not.
Meanwhile, Emmett continues his association with See The Light, the group that promises to make him straight. The group’s leaders outline the steps that Emmett will have to take in order to leave behind his gay life.
At the same time, Michael and Ted decide to unstraighten Emmett. They enlist a visiting porn actor to turn Emmett’s head and bring him back from the dark side, but the plan backfires when Emmett sees the actor as a challenge to overcome.
Kip arrives at Brian’s loft to continue working with Brian, but the evening becomes passionate, and the two wind up in bed. After, Kip turns to Brian seeking professional advice and assistance; believing that he shares a bond with Brian, Kip asks Brian to recommend him for a promotion. Brian balks at the idea, and Kip can’t believe his ears.
The See The Light points out the duplicity of Emmett’s friends, how they used a porn star to win his favor. Emmett succumbs to the logic they present, and informs his friends that he must respect his new goals and new life — and so must they. He can no longer spend time with them.
Melanie reluctantly gives in to her urges, seeking solace from her troubled relationship in the arms of the compassionate Marianne. She guiltily confesses her infidelity to Lindsay and decides she needs to leave the house for a while. Melanie has a touching goodbye with Gus, then quietly walks away from her home and her family.
Kip confronts Brian about his lack of solidarity, but Brian’s mind is made up: he doesn’t do mentoring, if Kip wants a promotion he’ll have to earn it — through work. At the ad agency the next day, Brian is informed that Kip is suing him for sexual harassment.

Episode 114

Brian is put on a leave of absence from work because of Kip’s sexual harassment suit. Trying to succeed in See The Light, Emmett begins dating a butch, but friendly lesbian, Heather. Michael and David’s romantic evening is interrupted when Michael gets a call from Ted about Brian’s dilemma. Michael is concerned, but David doesn’t want their evening spoiled. In need of a lawyer, Brian goes to Melanie for help. She puts him in the hot seat, but in the end takes the case. He may be a slut, but he’s not guilty of sexual harassment.
Michael discusses the Brian situation at home with Debbie, Vie and Justin. He lies to David about Debbie being sick, so he can go cheer up Brian. Brian and Kip confront each other at work and Kip gives his slanted version of their evening. It’s clear he’s not backing down. Out at the movies, Ted and Melanie are shocked to run into Emmett and his date — Heather. It’s awkward to say the least. Believing that Debbie’s sick, David pays her a visit. Debbie and Vic try to cover, but it’s clear that Michael has lied. Michael comforts Brian and they wind up performing a drunken musical routine at Woody’s. Tracking them down, David jealously watches the two old friends.
Hungover, Brian goes over his case with Melanie. Lindsay shows up with Gus, sending Melanie hurriedly out the door. Lindsay’s headed back to work since she’s a single mom now and is asking Brian for money for Gus. Justin’s there and sees the low balance left in Brian’s checkbook.
At the diner, the gang discusses what to do about Emmett. While Vie votes to let Emmett be, Michael and Ted decide to pay See The Light a visit. Desperate for a success story to tell See The Light, Emmett and Heather have sex — while fantasizing about their ideal same-sex partners. On a mission to save Brian, Justin seduces a reluctant Kip at Woody’s. Just when things are getting hot and heavy at Kip’s place, Justin reveals his underage status. Kip’ s worried, but Justin lets him know that their secret is safe as long as he does him one little favor. Michael and Ted infiltrate See The Light to tell Emmett how much they love him.
Brian is surprised to hear from Ryder that the charges have been dropped and it’s back to business as usual. After catching Michael in his lie, David and Michael both admit that they need to work on being honest with each other. Emmett, in his most outrageous outfit ever, makes his grand return to Babylon with Heather in tow. Reunited, the gang dances the night away.

Episode 115

With a litany of baby instructions, Lindsay hands Gus over to Brian for the weekend; she’s going away to a teacher conference, and he’s going to baby-sit for his son. Michael and David prepare for the arrival of David’s son, Hank (his son from his former marriage). Meanwhile, Ted runs into Dale, an old classmate of his. Ted feels very boring in comparison to the successful Dale.
Over lunch, Michael confesses to Brian that he’s very worried about meeting David’s son: What if the kid hates him? Debbie asks if Brian’s attending the Leather Ball this weekend but Brian has daddy duty. At the airport, Michael meets David’s son, and his worst fears are realized — the kid doesn’t particularly like him, and Michael immediately feels like a third wheel.
Back at Brian’s loft, he’s trying to calm a crying Gus, when his father, Jack, shows up with some very unsettling news: he’s got cancer, and it’s very advanced. He’s dying.
The next morning. David convinces Michael to join him and Hank on the first of a long list of adventures he’s mapped out for the weekend. Brian tries to pawn of Gus on Debbie, who quickly figures out something’s up with his dad. Upon prying a little, she explains to Brian that his dad made a significant gesture in telling him he’s sick, and Brian should return the favor: He should tell his dad he’s gay.
David drags Hank and Michael along on his rigidly scheduled afternoon of fun. Michael sees, if David does not, that Hank is not enjoying himself at all.
And the Leather Ball arrives! It’s a supremely hot to-do (and not just because leather doesn’t breathe). Emmett and Ted show up, and Ted promptly meets a Leather Daddy — it turns out he’s Dale! Brian arrives (having pawned Gus off on Justin) and cruises the club. He connects sexually with a leather guy, until another guy starts spouting some “role-playing” talk about being Brian’s daddy. Brian shoves him furiously away.
Ted has gone back to Dale’s place to “catch up”. Dale offers to show Ted his dungeon, but a terrified Ted leaves.
Very late that night, Brian returns to his loft to find Justin and a very pissed-off Melanie. She had heard from Lindsay that Brian was watching Gus and has come to rescue the baby. She reads Brian the riot act on being an irresponsible parent.
The next morning, David gets an emergency call and has to go treat an injured hockey player, and Michael and Hank are forced to spend the day together. At the Liberty Diner, Ted gets teased for always ordering the same thing, “old reliable Ted” It’s very like the things Dale was saying last night. Later, Michael and Hank bond over their shared love of comic books, and Hank confesses his frustration over his dad’s aggressive over-planning of their weekend together.
Brian goes to visit his dad and comes out to him in a very unapologetic, quiet way. But he doesn’t get the reaction he expects. His dad gets quite angry. Michael and Hank return from their afternoon, and a fight brews between David and Michael when Michael tries to convey some of Hank’s frustration to David.
Ted, extremely nervous, enters Dale’s dungeon. Dale ties him up and starts flogging him. To his surprise, Ted starts to get into it.
At the airport, Hank finally tells David that he feels David is trying too hard, but he ends up hugging David and Michael goodbye. Michael and David make up once Hank is on the plane.
Then back at Brian’s loft, Lindsay confronts Brian: he can’t keep being a father when it’s convenient to him. Is he going to start acting like a dad all the time or what? Just then, Jack arrives, apologizing for his nasty reaction to Brian’s news. Brian introduces Jack to his grandson, Gus.

Episode 116

Michael tells David that he should be paying half of all the expenses now that they’re living together. David assures him that that isn’t necessary, but Michael insists.
It’s Dyke Night at Babylon and Emmett and Ted have brought Melanie there to try and cheer her up. But everyone she sees reminds her of Lindsay. Ted urges her to try and patch things up.
At the bank, Michael questions the teller about his bank account. He has more money than he should. Michael realizes that David’s been re-depositing the checks that he’s been writing him. Brian can’t understand why Michael’s so upset.
At St. James Academy, Justin and Daphne witness scrawny Max being beaten up by bullies. Even more infuriating to Justin is that he sees his teacher, Mr. Dixon, witnessing the altercation without interfering. Justin gets in a verbal sparring match with Chris and other bullies in Mr. Dixon’s class. Mr. Dixon lets Chris get away with the name-calling, but comes down hard on Justin. Justin tells his teacher off.
Melanie goes to Lindsay’s trying to patch things up, but is instead greeted by smooth-talking Frenchman, Guillaume. Guillaume is living at Lindsay’s and balks when Melanie asks to come in and see Gus.
In the locker room of the gym, the guys are surprised and embarrassed to see Melanie charge in. Brian’s even more surprised to learn that there’s a strange Frenchman living with Lindsay and Gus.
Debbie encourages Justin to get pro-active and form a group at his high school to raise awareness.
Michael confronts David with his discovery about the checks. His pride is hurt. David agrees to only do things they both can afford. Unfortunately he’d just booked a trip to Paris for them. He’ll cancel it if that’s what Michael wants...
Brian, Melanie, Ted and Emmett pay a surprise visit to Lindsay’s. They find out that Lindsay and Guillaume are getting married so he can get his green card.
Justin’s starting to take Debbie’s club idea seriously and wants Brian’s advice. Brian goes into advertising executive mode about how to attract interest in his club.
The guys are excited to hear Michael has a chance to go to Paris. Everyone is encouraging Michael not to be selfish and let David pay.
Brian and Lindsay take a stroll with Gus. Brian tells her that she’s cutting he and Melanie out of the picture with this Guillaume plan. Lindsay is furious that the two of them have finally joined forces — against her.
Justin’s first club meeting draws a crowd, but is shut down by Mr. Dixon who says Justin didn’t follow school procedures.
Michael tells David he’d love to go to Paris, he’ll pay for the baguettes and they’ll call it even.
Guillaume and Lindsay plan their false history together. Melanie stops by and lets Lindsay know she wants to patch things up, but for Lindsay it’s too little too late. She’s going through with it.
Michael shows off his new wardrobe and camcorder that David bought for him. Brian registers his strong disapproval and warns him that he’ll pay for it in the end.
Walking down Liberty Avenue with the guys, Justin runs into Chris and his girlfriend. Justin loudly tells Chris off in front of a crowd, letting everyone know that this is the guy that he jerked off who likes to beat up gay people. Chris gets a taste of his own medicine in front of his girlfriend. The guys cheer for Justin.

Episode 117

Michael and David have a little party and slideshow to celebrate their return from Paris. The gang is shocked to see Michael acting so snotty. That night, David’s planning his fundraiser for Senator Baxter and asks Michael whom he wants to invite. Michael decides not to invite any of the gang.
Brian lets Michael know what a bore he’s become and warns him not to forget where he came from. Michael gets pissed off. Vic finds an announcement about the fundraiser in a newspaper and the whole gang questions Michael about their invites. Michael tells them he did them a favor by not inviting them -- that the whole affair is going to be boring. The friends see right through him and Debbie is especially hurt. Her son is embarrassed of her. Deciding that Michael needs to learn a lesson, the gang (Debbie, Brian, Justin, Vic, Ted and Emmett) crash the high-society fundraiser dressed in their most outrageous dance wear.
Michael is mortified, but even David agrees the gang turns out to be just what the stuffy party needed. Senator Baxter is delighted to meet some of her more colorful constituents. Michael berates Debbie and she lets him know her feelings are hurt. Later, Michael confesses to David that he thinks he’s been a real jerk. At a party at Debbie’s, Michael makes a group apology, letting the gang know how important they are to him.
Lindsay tells Melanie that she and Guillaume are getting married next week. The gang isn’t happy about it. Brian goes to Lindsay’s house where she and Guillaume are preparing for the big day. Lindsay also confesses to Brian that she’s to blame for the break-up. Meanwhile, Guillaume continues to piss Brian off. Guillaume and Brian run into each other at the farmers’ market where Guillaume tells him his plan to adopt Gus. Brian is livid.
That night while having problems with Gus, Lindsay calls Melanie to calm him down over the phone. The old flame begins to burn between them. Brian and Melanie intercept Lindsay and Guillaume on the way to city hall. Brian agrees to sign over his parental rights to Melanie, but only if she and Lindsay get back together. They agree and Guillaume’s left out in the cold.
At school Justin’s locker is vandalized and his artwork is destroyed. Justin talks about his school problems with Jennifer, Daphne, Vic and Debbie. Debbie tells him to fight. Jennifer isn’t as confident. Justin and Jennifer meet with school headmaster, Dr. Perkins. Perkins lets them know he’s holding the cards and makes a veiled threat if Justin continues to cause trouble. At school, Chris continues to harass Justin. At the fundraiser, Debbie and Justin approach Senator Baxter about his problems starting the gay-straight alliance at his school. Baxter is interested, very interested. Justin holds a rally protesting the school and Senator Baxter shows up to support him. It’s a big win for his club. Jennifer is there and let’s Justin know she supports and believes in him.
At an after-rally gathering at Debbie’s house, Justin tells Brian how excited he is. But Brian bursts the boy’s bubble, pointing out to him that Senator Baxter is only using him, that thinking he’s won only makes him vulnerable. Justin isn’t worried — he has Brian to protect him.

Episode 118

Michael is tempted by a hunk at Babylon, but resists -- Hunky slips him his phone number anyway. Justin announces that he got into Dartmouth but has decided to go to the Pittsburgh Institute of Fine Art instead. Brian declares Babylon lame and takes off to a bathhouse where he runs into David getting serviced. The next day, Michael kids Brian about the baths and Brian resists telling him about David.
Ted runs into Blake at Babylon. It’s clear he’s on crystal meth. Emmett urges Ted to stay away from him. Later in the bathroom, Ted finds Blake passed-out on the floor. He takes charge, carrying Blake out of the bathroom and accompanying him to the hospital. Ted spends the night at Blake’s bedside and is there when he wakes up. Blake confesses to him that he doesn’t have a place to stay. Ted brings Blake home with him and their steamy night together picks up where it left off. The group can’t believe Ted is letting Blake stay at his condo. They tell him he’s being too nice and to keep an eye on his stuff. At the gas station, Ted can’t find his wallet. He accuses Blake and despite Blake’s protests kicks him out of the condo. Later Ted finds the wallet in the sofa. He realizes he’s made a big mistake.
Justin tells Jennifer about his acceptance at Pittsburgh, she’s happy but tells him that his father will be disappointed about Dartmouth. Just then a realtor arrives and Jennifer confesses that they’re selling the house because they’re planning on getting a divorce. Later when Melanie and Lindsay present Justin with art supplies, he announces that he’s going to Dartmouth after all he doesn’t want to disappoint his parents any more.
David sits Michael down and tells him the truth about his trips to the baths. Michael is livid and calls him a hypocrite. This is trouble. Trying to figure out what to do about David, Michael gets very contrasting points of view from the gang. Michael begins to hook-up with Hunky on the jogging path and is interrupted by Lindsay and Melanie. Michael and David make-up by having a brutally honest talk about their sex lives.
Justin is all set to send in his acceptance letter to Dartmouth, but instead finds himself sketching on the piece of paper.

Episode 119

Brian’s hot threesome is interrupted by the news of his father’s death. A moment passes, and the threesome is quickly resumed. The boys, particularly Michael, are concerned that Brian is not dealing with his feelings. At the wake, his sister Claire sobs uncontrollably while other struggle to tell stories about the late Jack Kinney. Brian chooses an anecdote that shocks and upsets the crowd.
Justin’s high school friend Daphne has decided she’s ready to have sex. She wants it to be with someone she knows, someone with experience: someone like Justin. Justin complies, and is surprised when things get “weird” between them afterwards. Lindsay and Melanie need to remind Justin that one’s first time can create feelings of attachment you’re not ready for. Justin knows exactly what they’re talking about (see pilot).
Ted spots Blake at Babylon and apologizes for wrongfully accusing him of stealing his wallet. Blake accepts the apology, and Ted accepts Blake into his house (and bed!). Blake may not be a thief, but he’s definitely an addict. Emmett tries to pay Blake off to stay away from his friend. But, Ted goes searching, and finally rescues Blake from a decrepit drug den.
At Jack Kinney’s wake, Michael recounted a happy tale of Brian’s dad cheering while a young Michael and Brian bowled. Later on, Brian corrects Michael’s memory —it was Brian and Michael who hugged in celebration, and Dad who called them ‘fucking fairies’. Brian and Michael go out for a cathartic night of queer bowling, and Brian finally deals with his emotions.

Episode 120

It’s the King of Babylon contest, and everyone has a date. Ted has Blake, even if the gang is wary of Blake’s drug problem. Brian has Justin, even if Brian refuses to be considered anything but single. Michael has David, if only to prove that an “older man” can still have “it”. And, before the end of the night, Emmett will meet Brent. For that matter, before the end of the night, Emmett and Brent will fall in love, reach new heights of sexual ecstasy, live in perfect harmony, grow tired of each other, and ultimately break up.
Meanwhile, Vic gets cruised by an undercover cop in the mall. Vic resists, but still ends up under arrest for indecent exposure. Debbie comes to the rescue with his medication and his lawyer, Melanie. But no one can come up with bail on the weekend —except for Blake, who finally earns acceptance from the group.
Michael has brought David to Babylon to show him off to his friends. Brian gives him the perfect opportunity, by entering David in the King of Babylon Contest. Brian’s just kidding, of course, but David isn’t — his show-stopping striptease garners far more attention than Michael ever wanted. However, the King isn’t crowned until Justin takes the stage.
Feeling neglected by Brian, Justin fights the only way he knows how, by beating Brian at his own game. As the newly crowned king, Justin steals a ‘dreamboy’ right out of Brian’s grasp, and gives him the royal treatment in a Babylon backroom. By morning, dreamboy has gotten too clingy, and Justin has to bid him farewell. Brian can’t help but smile, the young apprentice has learned very well, indeed.

Episode 121

The crême de la crême of Pittsburgh’s advertising firms have gathered for the presentation of Adperson of the Year. The handsome judge from New York, Adam, announces the winner— Brian Kinney. Brian celebrates his award by having sex with the judge. Adam is impressed with his work, in every respect. He asks Brian why he’s still in Pittsburgh and urges him to apply for ajob at his own agency, in New York.
Gathered around Debbie’s kitchen table, Melanie, Vic, Michael, Justin and Debbie discuss Vic’s arraignment on the indecent exposure charges. Vie insists he’s innocent but just wants to be done with it.
David’s ex-wife is getting another divorce and his son, Hank, is taking it badly. Michael encourages David to visit Portland to see Hank.
Blake is scanning the classifieds for work as he and Ted walk down Liberty Ave. They head into the diner where Brian announces that he’s done with the Pittsburgh scene, the bright lights of Broadway beckon. He’s faxed a resume to Adam’s agency and when (not “if) he gets the job he’s leaving. Everyone’s shocked—Justin most of all.
Emmett pays Vie a visit urging him to fight the charges against him and protect his name. He tells Vie a story about an old teacher of his, Mr. Peffigrew, who faced similar charges but refused to fight and died years later, still ashamed.
Brian packs for his interview in New York, as Justin watches, in a deep sulk. Though he says he plans not to look back, Brian is moved by Justin’s emotion.
Blake is standing in front of a mirror in a department store, modeling an ‘interview suit’ for Ted. Ted impulsively jumps into the changing room with Blake and they’re soon going at it-- until they hear the salesperson just outside. She tells them to “take all the time you need, boys.”
In the courtroom, Vie is getting ready for his arraignment. Vie is planning to plead guilty, until Melanie shows him the arrest report. Vie is shocked—in the report, Vie is described as instigating the whole thing. When the judge asks for his plea, Vie stands up and gives a loud, “not guilty.” Emmett is relieved—his prayer has been answered. Back around Debbie’s kitchen table, Vie, Melanie and Michael are laying down baffle plans for the trial. Justin is there as well, but distracted. Debbie explains he’s upset because Brian’s leaving—this is news to Melanie.
Back from his interview, Brian is completely jazzed. Lindsay watches him unpack, annoyed because Brian hadn’t told her about the job. She asks him what it is he’s going to find in New York, when he has people who love him here. At Woody’s with Michael and Emmett, Blake and Ted celebrate Blake’s new job with Melanie’s law firm. Blake heads to the bar to buy a round, and the rest of the guys start talking about how they won’t miss Brian.
Vic admits to Debbie that he is feeling guilty because while he may not have done anything in the restroom, he wanted to—it’s been a long time since anyone found him attractive. The following day in the courtroom, Melanie confers with the Assistant District Attorney. It seems the officer who arrested Vie has a history of lying on arrest reports. Vie says that he is innocent and that, unlike Emmett’s Mr. Pettigrew, he has to defend his good name. The lawyers turn to face the judge...
Michael greets David upon his return from Portland. David got his son to see a therapist, but he realizes what Hank really needs is his father. David wants to move to Portland to be with Hank and asks Michael to move with him.
At the loft, Brian receives a phone call from Adam. Turns out Brian didn’t get the job after all. (It was given to a hotshot 25-year-old.) Brian is very cool, but when he hangs up he lies to Justin about the call.
In the balcony of a stately, yet past its prime, movie palace, Michael and Brian share a joint and a trip down memory lane since this theatre is where they spent a great deal of their wasted youth. Michael feels especially nostalgic since Brian will be leaving. Brian is silent on his own travel plans but points out that Michael will be leaving too. Michael says that he hasn’t decided anything yet, but Brian urges him to get the hell out of Pittsburgh while he can.
Blake returns to Ted’s condo after his first day of work. Ted wants to hear everything, but Blake playfully urges him to join him in a shower. Throwing off his clothes, Blake heads to the bathroom. Ted follows, pausing to pick up Blake’s discarded clothing. In his jacket pocket, he finds a vial of crystal meth.
In a restaurant, the whole gang has gathered to celebrate Vie’s legal victory. Vie thanks Melanie, and Emmett for his story about Mr. Pettigrew, which Emmett confesses may not have been entirely true. Meanwhile, Brian is enduring endless banter about his move to New York. He finally stalks off David, too, remains somewhat removed from the proceedings. Michael joins him and David apologizes for asking Michael to leave his family and friends. Michael tells him he has decided to go with him. He hugs David, and then turns to Brian who has been watching them, and says that they are both finally getting out of Pittsburgh. Brian is silent.

Episode 122

The countdown to midnight has begun at Brian’s loft and he’s wildly fucking as many men as he can. When he awakes, he is surrounded by his friends. They drag him to a funeral parlor to celebrate the end of life, as he knows it — because today, Brian Kinney is 30 years old. Brian announces he didn’t get that big job in New York after all.
Michael comes home to find David commanding troops of moving men packing boxes bound for Portland. There’s nothing left for Michael to do but sit back and look pretty. Over at Melanie’s law office Ted and Emmett arrive to take Blake out to lunch only to discover that he’s called in sick, and according to Melanie, this isn’t the first time. Emmett uses this opportunity to voice his suspicion that Blake is back on drugs. Later on, Ted tries to confront Blake about his problem, but is sidetracked by Blake’s insistence that Ted has sex with him.
At the bar, Emmett lifts a martini glass with Michael to toast this final evening at Babylon. Saddened, he decides to throw him a fabulous going-away party. Brian joins the conversation long enough to tell Michael that he finally has a chance to leave Pittsburgh and get a life, but that he can’t depend on David to provide him with a future. Brian attempts to drown his sorrows in men, but the only one interested is Justin, who invites Brian to be his prom date. Justin’s been urged by Debbie and Jennifer not to miss his prom, but he wants to go with someone he cares about. Brian simply laughs at the suggestion.
Recuperating from his wild night with Blake, Ted asks Emmett for advice. Emmett knows that Ted’s only options are to cut Blake loose or get him into rehab. Back at school, Justin runs into Daphne. The two realize how much they’ve missed each other and decide to go to the prom together.
Out shopping with Brian, Lindsay urges him to get over his aging phobia and embrace his birthday. Brian agrees with her and buys himself a beautiful silk scarf as a present. Getting ready for their party, Michael tries to convey some of his frustration to David, but David is too busy planning the move to pay any attention.
Emmett has decided to celebrate David and Michael’s departure for Portland with a theme of flannel! The gang’s all there, except Brian. He’s at his loft, drinking and listening to dead rock stars on his stereo. At the party, Michael asks Justin to look after Debbie — and Brian. Ted finally has it out with Blake and tells him to go into rehab or to get out of his life. In another troubled corner of the party, Michael is fed up with David treating him like a child. He wonders if David would give up as much as he has for him.
Michael finds Brian at the loft, very drunk and very high, with his white silk scarf—about to perform autoerotic asphyxiation. Michael is scared and furious that Brian could take such a risk—possibly killing him. Brian doesn’t seem to care. Michael tells him he’ll always be beautiful and young—whether 30, 40, 50 or 100! He’s Brian Kinney for fuck’s sake!
The next day, Ted helps Blake check into a rehab center. He promises Blake he’ll be back later that night, but when he returns with Emmett, Blake is gone. David and Michael discuss their issues as David finishes packing his bag. David believes Michael is being difficult because Brian’s not leaving Pittsburgh after all, but as Michael tells him, their problems are for once, all about David. At an impasse, David leaves Michael’s plane ticket, telling him it’s his choice.
Justin and Daphne enjoy themselves at the prom, despite the aggressive presence of Chris Hobbs. To everyone’s surprise, Brian appears, in a tux and his white silk scarf. He leads Justin to the dance floor and they dance as the whole school watches. After their dance Justin walks Brian to his car before returning to the prom. As Justin is walking away and before Brian can warn him, Chris Hobbs ambushes him and strikes him down with a blow to the head. Brian rushes to Justin’s side.
Michael makes his decision and rushes to the airport and arriving at the gate with only seconds to spare when his cell phone rings.
Some time later sitting alone in the hospital and covered with blood, Brian looks up to see Michael walking towards him. They hold each other, remembering how only months ago they were running down the same hospital corridor with Justin the night Gus was born.

Season 2 synopsis

Episode 201

It’s business (that is, pleasure) as usual at Babylon, which means the music is thumping, the boys are bumping, and Emmett’s checking out the view! QUEER AS FOLK is back, and (just in time to stop Ted’s moping) so is Michael! Brian’s been up to his old tricks (and plenty of new ones) in the Babylon Backroom – he seems to have lost himself in an orgy of distraction since the attack on Justin.
That’s how it seems. Brian’s actually maintained a secret vigil at Justin’s hospital bedside, watching him recuperate from brain injury. Justin has persevered with the tedious exercises designed to bring strength and dexterity back to his right hand. When he’s finally sent home to Jennifer’s condo, he doesn’t want to be smothered with affection, he wants to see Brian! He sneaks out with the aid of his trusty accomplice Daphne and heads to Liberty Avenue. In Justin’s fragile mental state it’s a risk, and when the boys at Woody’s crowd around him, Justin freaks out. Michael comes to his aid, Justin turns around, and he finally comes face to face with Brian. Back at Brian’s loft – Justin recounts the incident as it’s been told to him; he has no recollection of it himself. Brian fills him in on the goriest details with difficulty. Justin sees that they’ve both suffered a trauma, and he understands why Brian never visited him.
Lynette, Lindsay’s sister, is getting married. Lindsay and Melanie are invited, provided they are “discreet” – enter beards Emmett and Ted. Lindsay’s beard begins to itch, however, during her toast to the bride, and she closes with a rousing marriage proposal to her partner. It’s the gesture that counts; Melanie isn’t a big fan of “antiquated, meaningless, heterosexual rituals”.
While most of the wedding guests go home with their ears ringing, Emmett goes home with a cute usher! That makes four boys getting lucky in the apartment tonight: Michael’s got a hunk for himself as well! Does this mean Michael and David have an “arrangement” for extra-curricular out-of-state activities? No. It means Michael and David have split – and Michael’s friends are more than happy to welcome him back home.
Judge Roy Russo is presiding over the sentencing of Justin’s basher – Chris Hobbs. In his infinitely deluded wisdom, Judge Roy reasons that Chris was ‘unduly provoked’ by a peer ‘flaunting his lifestyle’ – he orders a suspended sentence and 500 hours of community service. Debbie is dumbfounded. She’s going to call P-FLAG, she’s going to protest, she’s going to march, and Brian is going to take action in his own way. Brian may be Justin’s best friend, and strongest ally. Nevertheless, Jennifer nearly lost her son when she tried to understand Brian’s world. From now on, she’s kindly asking Brian to stay away.

Episode 202

The boys are stuck. Ted’s stuck in a career he no longer wants. Michael’s stuck with the prospect of returning to his dead-end career at the Big Q. Emmett’s decided he’s stuck with an ass that needs surgical enhancement. Justin’s stuck in the worst situation of all. Since the attack, he has nightmares about Chris Hobbs, and he recoils from physical contact.
Jennifer is having trouble not only reaching, but even touching her son. Deb hints that Brian may be best suited to the job, but Jennifer refuses. When Justin throws a violent tantrum at home after Brian won’t see him, Jennifer asks Brian to do whatever it takes to reach him. Seeking advice from a former trick (also a psychiatrist), Brian is told that Justin must relive the experience in order to process it and move on. But, Brian’s best efforts to recreate the fateful prom night for Justin are ineffectual.
Another day at the office means another day for Ted to surf cumquik.com. It’s his last day, after Mr. Wertshafter catches him. Even Mr. Wertshafter knows he’s doing Ted a favour – ‘cause if you’re not passionate about your work, “you’re just jerking yourself off.”
Emmett needs money for his new buns, and Michael’s willing to try anything before going back to the Q. Thus, the adventurous housemates spend a night as naked waiters. Emmett adores getting his ass pinched black and blue – Michael’s just blue. It’s not for him. So he takes his old job back at the Big Q – his new boss being his old nemesis who has it out for him.
Lindsay’s decided to be practical. She can’t entertain notions of a wedding with Melanie when she wants to throw a memorable party for Gus’ first birthday. Memorable indeed. When Gus innocently starts to play with his new bat, Justin’s memory is finally triggered – Chris Hobbs swinging the bat, Brian calling to warn him – Justin relives the experience in vivid detail.
Melanie’s decided to be impractical. After their guests have left, she proposes to Lindsay, who answers with a whole-hearted yes! Justin says the same thing in Brian’s loft that night. He allows Brian to make love to him as his healing – and Brian’s redemption – begins.

Episode 203

Everyone in Woody’s loves the acclaimed new politically correct television series, Gay as Blazes. Everyone, that is, except for Brian. His idea of an honest look at gay life would have a lot more fucking and sucking – yet he’s the one up for The Center’s Hero Award after saving Justin. Not that he could be bothered to accept it, despite Lindsay and Melanie’s protests. The women are willing to manipulate Brian however they can for a seat on The Center’s Board.
Howard Bellweather, Pittsburgh’s gay social critic, is delighted to be receiving his award from The Center. He’s in town to sign his new book, and to denounce Brian’s award in the local paper: “How can the community honor a man with such dedication to drugs, decadence and debauchery as Brian Kinney?”
It’s Gay As Blazes come to life for Emmett on his naked maid rounds. Blair (the dentist) and Blaine (the lawyer) are so perfect, they even encourage Emmett to keep his dignity and stay dressed. Left alone in the house with either one of them, Emmett must keep his libido in check so as not to threaten their praiseworthy monogamy. He fails with flying colors.
Michael hopes to reconnect with Brian now that he’s back in Pittsburgh. But can he “go home again”? Howard Bellweather, the cast of Gay as Blazes, and their real life alter-egos Blair and Blaine all set impossible examples of politically correct gay life. Truly impossible: Ted and Emmett both learn crushing lessons at the hands of hypocrites. Brian Kinney’s sincerity remains intact. He’d love to piss off The Center, or Mr. Bellweather, but his true priority is his best friend Michael.

Episode 204

It’s PRIDE weekend in Pittsburgh!! Everyone is preparing to show their PRIDE in the annual parade – a first for Justin. Debbie’s ecstatic that her son, Michael, has finally found the courage to participate by agreeing to march front and center with her in the P-FLAG contingent. Emmett’s looking forward to marching with one of his first friends in Pittsburgh, the legendary drag queen Godiva. Lindsay and Melanie plan to march with the Gay Marriage Initiative. Ted’s PRIDE weekend looks to be his best, when he’s picked up by the hunky Troy. Brian won’t march, but he does plan to celebrate (translation: fuck as much as he can), just as soon as he designs a marketing plan for the notoriously homophobic president of Poole Beverages.
Debbie has to swallow her PRIDE when Michael backs out at the last minute. He’s afraid of being spotted by his homophobic co-workers from the Big Q. Emmett’s spirits also plummet, when Vic informs him that Godiva has died at the AIDS hospice. While visiting the hospice, Justin is accosted by his attacker Chris Hobbs. Hobbs is there for his community service sentence – Justin is shaken, and starting to second-guess his decision to march. Ted’s PRIDE is also hurt, when he learns that he was merely Troy’s good deed for the weekend – a pity fuck.
Lindsay and Melanie are shaken up by the arrival of Mel’s sexy ex – Leda. Melanie would love to forego her dull commitment to marching with the Marriage Initiative in favor of riding with Leda and the Dykes on Bikes for old times’ sake. Lindsay thinks the Initiative is important, not dull, and she confides in Brian that she feels threatened by Leda. Lindsay also tells Brian that he should be ashamed of working for Poole Beverages. Poole’s money is as good as anyone’s for Brian.
Emmett hatches a plan to see Godiva march again and make Michael’s mother proud. Debbie’s heart leaps when her son joins the parade in fabulous drag (in Godiva’s dress, of course). Brian convinces Justin to march as well – so that the Hobbs of the world won’t win. Brian won’t let Poole Beverages win either. His campaign will save the company, but only by marketing to the gay community, and only if Poole makes a contribution to the Gay Marriage Initiative. The Initiative will have to do without Lindsay this year, she’s decided to let her inhibitions go and join Mel, Leda, and the rest of the Dykes on Bikes. Swept up in the spirit, Ted bravely re-enters the dating scene. It seems no one can resist the contagious celebration of PRIDE!

Episode 205

Justin’s dreams of attending art school are about to be realized! Lindsay and Melanie’s dream of their very own wedding has been announced! While everyone’s life seems to be accelerating, Michael’s is immobilized where it always has been – at the Big Q. Still, he may be better off than Ted. Since being fired, Ted has found solace in pornography and chronic masturbation.
Justin faces a major obstacle to realizing his dreams. Damage caused by Chris Hobbs’ attack has cost him fine motor skills in his hands. He has trouble controlling the brush, and he’s lagging behind his classmates. He decides to deal with the situation by quitting, drinking, and partying at Babylon. However, Brian won’t let him quit so easily – he brings a special computer home that could allow Justin more motor control to create his art. Justin doesn’t want Brian’s help; he wants to wallow in self-pity. Lindsay intervenes when she witnesses Justin snapping at Debbie. She introduces him to a disabled artist who creates art despite difficulty, because, “what’s easy, besides complaining?”
Michael’s boss (and former underling) Andrew is relishing his new position of authority over Michael. Since Michael went away and came back to the Big Q, as far as Andrew’s concerned, that means Michael is the newest employee – the one who gets the degrading duty of donning the Big Q clown costume for the tri-yearly sidewalk sale. Michael acquiesces for one shift, but when Andrew decides to have a second day of fun at Michael’s expense, he quits. Now, his dreams are riding on Captain Astro and an e-bay auction. He wants to sell his prized Issue #1 for enough money to buy the local Comic Store. Debbie worries that her son’s dreams are foolhardy. Brian admires his best friend’s guts and helps stimulate the bidding.
Emmett leads Michael and Brian to Ted’s condo for an intervention with the irrepressible whack-meister. Ted may believe he has the problem “in hand”, but Brian still feels compelled to find Ted an accounting job at his ad agency. Ted’s new job, new boss, new desk, and new life are all too familiar and all too mind-numbing.
Justin is willing to give this new technology a try – he begins to sketch Brian. No “I told you so”s from the subject; he feigns unawareness of Justin’s rekindled confidence. Ted also has a new lease on life. He’s decided to find a job doing what makes him happy – he’s starting a porn website! Michael risked everything he had, and got exactly what he wanted - $10,000 on e-Bay for his Captain Astro. A new chapter in Michael’s life begins as he unlocks the door to his very own comic store.

Episode 206

Michael’s happy to be setting up business in his new comic store. He’s even happier when a gorgeous customer walks in – Ben Bruckner. Forget happy, he’s ecstatic when Ben asks for advice picking out comics with gay themes. Ben teaches gay studies at Carnegie Mellon. He’s so impressed by Michael’s passion (for comics) that he asks Michael to guest lecture to his class.
Ted’s getting down to business as well – his new website “JerkatWork.net” is ideal for those who like to, well, you know. Emmett has a great idea for promoting the site – a celebrity jerk session. Who better than Zack O’Tool – the porn star enlisted to bring Emmett back from his misguided straight phase last year.
Lindsay is shocked by Ted’s dirty little business venture. She can’t see how anyone she knows would be willing to put their bodies on display. Melanie can. She’s compelled to tell Lindsay that she paid for school by posing for an adult magazine many years ago. Lindsay is horrified. Correction – Lindsay thinks she’s horrified, until Melanie catches her enjoying the photo ‘spread’ privately later on. All is forgiven, and Lindsay gets to enjoy the real thing.
Justin is enjoying his life with Brian. Brian only realizes the full scope of the situation when he hears a gossip in the supermarket remarking that former stud Brian Kinney is now in a… relationship. Brian squashes this rumor quickly by bringing the gossip home for some hot, very un-relationship sex. Justin walks in, and his image of domestic bliss is similarly squashed. Michael doesn’t help when he explains that Justin may only be there because Brian feels guilty about Chris Hobbs’ attack. Justin doesn’t ‘do’ charity – he goes to stay with Debbie. Debbie challenges Brian to admit his feelings for Justin.
Zack bails on Ted at the last minute – he’s too busy filming the sports epic “Backsides in Motion”. Too many prospective customers have logged on for the show, and the show must go on, so Ted passes the torch (that is, lube) to Emmett. Who knew? Emmett’s a grower (not a shower) – a HUGE star is born!
Michael bails too, on the lecture – he’s intimidated by the intellectuals in Ben’s class. Ben finds Michael and convinces him that his passion for what he loves should be shared. Michael accepts this second chance and does an impressive job, which leads to a first date. Michael and Ben could turn out to be a dynamic duo!
Brian finds Justin at Babylon. He wants Justin – but with conditions. They’re still going to fuck whoever they want. This is a queer relationship – not an imitation of a hetero one. Brian and Justin negotiate the fine points and seal it with a kiss.

Episode 207

Michael decides to continue dating Ben – despite the fact that he is HIV positive. Michael believes he can handle it, but no one else does – least of all his mother Debbie. Debbie has been through the worst of it once before with her brother, Vic. Brian, Ted and Emmett also think it’s too much responsibility for Michael to take on.
Lindsay and Melanie need more money for their wedding. Lindsay’s parents have already funded 3 weddings for her straight sister, so it only seems right that they help out Lindsay and Melanie now. Ron and Nancy Peterson disagree. They only pay for “real” weddings. Lindsay reaches out by inviting her parents to a civilized party – one she hopes will prove how mature and responsible she and Melanie can be.
Being a big internet porn star is swelling Emmett’s head in more ways than one. He presents Ted with a list of demands befitting a star of his magnitude. Ted refuses – “Where would you be without my website?” “Where would your website be without me?” After they cool off, the boys admit they do need each other, and it’s time to Jerk@work (.net) once again.
Lindsay’s parents cancel on Lindsay and Melanie’s party. Melanie sees through their flimsy alibi and guilts them into attending. However, by the time they arrive, the party has given up on putting on airs of responsibility, and become a rocking bash complete with Brian’s drugs, and Leda’s strap-on! The Petersons leave with all their worst suspicions confirmed. Lindsay can relax and not try to be something she isn’t. Her family of friends accepts her just as she truly is.
Vic is offended at her sister Debbie’s prejudice against HIV positive Ben. Debbie’s sorry, she just can’t risk that kind of suffering again. Justin naively relishes his HIV negative relationship with Brian. He figures they’re living worry-free: they could even fuck bareback if they wanted. Brian disagrees. He gets Justin all worked up at the thought of it, and then leaves him – in order to teach him a lesson. Brian expects to have lots of sex, that’s why he’s always safe. Disregarding the opinions of all others, Michael’s getting hot and heavy with Ben. That is, until he’s in the bathroom, confronted by all of Ben’s medication. The reality hits Michael and he has to say no. Ben tries to sound sincere when he says, “Better to know now, before someone gets hurt”.

Episode 208

After his break up with Ben, Michael decides to get back in the saddle, and start dating again. He places an ad with a dating service, but he’s not providing enough spunk to sell himself. Brian, Ted, Lindsay, and Melanie give Michael a complete make over for his picture – open shirt and wet with an accent on the bulge. They write a description that’ll make Michael the object of every man’s desire.
Jennifer comments to Justin how envious she is that he is about to have the most exciting time of his life, meeting new people – his own age. Brian agrees, but Justin believes he’s already having the most exciting time of his life, with Brian. He goes to a college party with Daphne and doesn’t seem to fit in. Frat boys trying to hit on girls, it’s not his scene. Justin exchanges glances with a naïve freshman. They confirm the attraction by continuing to meet eyes. That’s enough for Justin to pounce. He leads Eric into the nearest room with a lock on the door, where they have sex. It’s the very first time for the kid. Justin comes off like an old pro. He resists the temptation to kiss, for as long as he can, but he can’t control himself. He breaks one rule of his relationship with Brian – He kisses another guy.
Ted has catapulted Emmett’s career to super stardom. The fan mail is pouring in. Most of it is a bunch of crap but something catches Emmett’s eye. A gold bracelet sent from a secret admirer. Who could it be? Emmett has always wanted to be swept off his feet so, his expectations are high. A limo arrives and takes Emmett to a mysterious mansion. He’s overwhelmed with delight until he finds out that the gentleman caller, George Schickel, is old enough to be his grandfather. Emmett doesn’t want anything to do with the old geezer, even if he is one of the wealthiest men in Pittsburgh. But, the old man’s persistence finally pays off. Emmett agrees to spend some time with him. His charming demeanor and kind heart gives Emmett the ability to see past the age barrier and form a friendship.
The impression of Michael’s first date – a dream. They get right to business and start out the date by simply fucking. When that’s over, they spend a little time getting to know each other. Beyond looks, his personality is worthless. Michael soon realizes that finding the perfect guy isn’t going to be as easy as he thought. Michael takes some advice from his mother and goes to visit a matchmaker. Ida Pearlstein gives Michael some information on where and when he can find the man of his dreams. Michael is skeptical but goes along with it. When he shows up, he sees Ben. She was right. Ben is the man of his dreams. Too bad, it’s just a coincidence. Ben is there with another man. Michael leaves alone.
Justin gets a visit from Eric. In the same way that Brian might treat someone, Justin breaks the kid’s heart by telling him he was just a fuck. Completely rejected, Eric leaves in tears. Justin meets up with Brian later at Babylon. They see a hot young one dancing. Brian suggests that they go for him. Justin grabs Brian, they begin to kiss and decide they need only each other tonight.

Episode 209

Michael is missing Ben. He let him slip away because he listened to others instead of himself. He wants to try and fix things with Ben and start over. Ben has issues with someone that is so easily influenced by others. He’s looking for someone who’ll be there for him through thick and thin.
Brian’s sister, Claire, has a favor to ask. Would he mind taking care of mother? Brian has pushed the responsibility off on her for years. It’s his turn. When he arrives, he finds out he’s been conned into taking Mrs. Kinney to church. Brian hasn’t been to church since he was a kid. His mom is introducing him to everybody. He must meet Reverend Tom; he’s been so helpful since Dad died. She considers him a son. Brian notices he looks very familiar – he fucked him in the bathhouse.
Ted meets a man named Thor at Babylon. He’s way out of Ted’s league, but what the hell? He gives the God of Thunder his card expecting little response. Thor can’t believe it -- Jerk-at-work.net is his favorite web site. They arrange for a date. Ted has been working so hard he doesn’t know if he’ll be able to get it “up” when the time comes. Emmett has a solution – Viagra. Ted pops the pill before the date, so it’ll have time to take effect. Unfortunately Thor had to cancel. The Viagra starts to kick in and Ted is stuck with an uncontrollable hard on.
After church Brian joins Emmett and Justin at Mel and Lindsay’s for brunch. They’re gossiping about the minister when Emmett’s cell rings. It’s Ted, something is wrong. The entire brunch bunch finds Ted at the door with a big problem. Eighteen hours later and Ted’s boner is still raging hard. Brian and Justin have some fun with Viagra back at the loft. While they are going at it, the doorbell rings. Brian’s mom hand delivers a cake to thank Brian for taking her to church. She meets Justin and puts two and two together. Her son is a homosexual.
With no luck getting rid of the bothersome boner, Emmett takes Ted to the doctor. There’s nothing he can do, just give it time. Later, the gang meets up for a beer at Woody’s karaoke night. Michael shows up with Ben, much to the surprise of the guys. Ben starts to feel awkward and leaves. Before he gets to the door Michael hits him with a karaoke version of Michael Jackson’s “Ben.” It wins home over and they decide to have dinner the next night. Ted meets Thor at Babylon. In the back room Thor discovers Ted’s big impressive problem. When Thor goes down on Ted, he loses the erection. He’s cured. “Thank you Thor -- you made me soft!”
Brian goes to see Reverend Tom. A disagreement takes place when Brian asks him why his mother feels the way she does about homosexuality. Does he preach that it is wrong? What would she think of his backroom escapades? Tom says he knows who he has to answer to, and it’s certainly not Brian. While his mother is praying, Brian interrupts and tries to make sense of his relationship with her, and her relationship with God. His mother attempts to put things in perspective. Brian lets her shine her light and doesn’t say a word about Reverend Tom’s secret.
Michael brings Ben to Debbie’s house for dinner with her and Uncle Vic. Debbie feels ambushed and retaliates with a Q and A session about Ben’s health and history with HIV. Michael starts to get upset. Debbie tells him that this is reality, so deal with it. Ben understands a protective Mom. Michael and Ben take it back to Ben’s apartment and start a positive relationship.

Episode 210

In the latest issue of Captain Astro, Michael’s hero dies from an intergalactic virus, with no known cure. Considering his relationship with Ben this is not only a frightening coincidence but also the end of an era. Michael has enjoyed Captain Astro’s adventures for years and no one seems to understand how devastating his death is, except surprisingly – Justin.
Melanie and Lindsay are making final decisions regarding the wedding. The expenses are stacking up and it’s causing problems for the two of them. Lindsay’s mother refuses to let her wear Grandmother’s dress in the wedding. She says if Grandma knew a dyke was getting married in her dress she would turn over in her grave! Needless to say, things are not going they way they planned and the one thing she was looking forward to has been denied. The girls break into Lindsay’s parents house to steal the dress and find an old box of letters belonging to her grandmother. It turns out that years ago, she had an intimate relationship with a woman – they were in love. In a different time and place they could have been together. They never find the dress, but the letters inspire them to celebrate their ability and right to be together.
Emmett and George are having a great time together. It’s rare that he goes out. He doesn’t even get to attend the opera anymore – that’s his horrible ex wife’s scene. Emmett convinces him to move their secret relationship to the dance floor at Babylon, where George meets the guys. After a brief first impression of being a wrinkly old geezer, George wins them over with his charm. Brian and Justin are there looking for someone to bring home and share for the night. After scanning the dance floor they finally decide on a cute blonde.
Debbie is dumping the trash at the Liberty Diner and finds a dead body in the dumpster! Detective Horvath is running the investigation. He interviews Debbie and casually offends her by making a “fag” joke. She tells him to watch what he says. He offers his badge number for her to file a report if she has a complaint. Back inside the diner everyone is going about their usual business. Debbie is outraged. How can they ignore the fact that someone was murdered on Liberty Ave? It could have been one of them!
Michael, still heartbroken over the death of Captain Astro and a little perturbed by the unsolved murder on Liberty Avenue, watches business as usual from Ben’s apartment window. He feels that something should be said or done, out of respect for the young man that was killed. After all, it could have been any one of them. Ben agrees and they conduct their own candlelight vigil and monogamous lovemaking. At the same time Brian and Justin are partying at Babylon. Brian is about to leave with the trick of the night. Justin is a little worried, Brian doesn’t even know the guys name and he’s going home with him. What about the murderer? Are you kidding? There has never been a hotter time to fuck a stranger.

Episode 211

Lindsay and Melanie are getting married! Not only that, Brian’s just won two tickets to the Miami White Party! Unfortunately, the two big events fall on the same weekend. However, Brian promises to send a postcard. Big news comes in threes – as Emmett announces that he’s saved enough to finally purchase the surgically enhanced butt that he’s always wanted.
Leda throws a raucous stagette party for the brides to be. Mysterious Marilyn is there to warn the couple against planning any major events that weekend; as everyone knows, Mercury is in Retrograde. Over the next few days, Mel and Lindsay try to ignore the tranny psychic’s ominous warning. But it’s hard to ignore – their venue and caterer have been shut down for health regulations and their rings have been stolen!
It seems Mercury is out to ruin more than just Mel and Lindsay’s wedding. Ted and Michael’s friendship is being put to the test. Ted trusted Michael to buy their joint wedding gift for the couple, and is not pleased with Michael’s choice. It seems one man’s exotic fertility goddess is another man’s tacky, embarrassing knick-knack. Emmett’s suffering too, his boyfriend George thinks anyone whose self worth depends on his ass, is an ass. Even Vic has been cursed by the cosmos. The government is reevaluating his disability – he may have to find work. Debbie gives Vic’s rusty chef skills a shot at the diner. Unfortunately, he lets everyone down: starving patrons, Deb, and himself. The final blow comes when the cleaners ruin the brides’ dresses. Lindsay calls the whole thing off, speaking the unspeakable: “We’re not meant to get married – because we’re gay.”
Melanie echoes Lindsay’s words to Brian, “because we’re gay”. That’s all Brian needs to hear. Brian corrals the troops: Vic, Debbie, Justin, Michael, Ted, and Emmett. They’re going to save this wedding. Who knows weddings better than fags? Emmett’s fruitless search for a venue ends when George offers a beautiful wing of his mansion. George would also like to pay for elaborate decorations, but Emmett insists he can cover the costs. He’s going to use his butt money! Since the diner episode, Vic has had trouble believing in himself when it comes to the wedding cake. Debbie uses her unique methods of persuasion to get Vic baking again. Justin really feels like a part of the “family” pulling together for the happy couple. Brian has invited him to revel in the hedonism of the White Party - but Justin can’t bear to miss the big event.
The girls are shocked to be stirred out of bed by Brian. They’re even more shocked as they arrive outside Schickel mansion - where they learn they’re soon to be married. Brian has even managed to obtain the exact rings that Melanie and Lindsay had designed for themselves. Brian offers his Miami tickets to Lindsay as a honeymoon, but Lindsay tells him to hang on to them. They share a private moment of respect and understanding for each other. Lindsay needs to have this public ritual of her commitment to Melanie. Brian needs to be true to himself, to indulge himself in Miami.
At the wedding, Lindsay and Melanie express their love and devotion in such a way that every eye begins to tear. Ted and Michael put aside their petty gift argument and beg each other for forgiveness. Vic’s cake is a hit, too; it’s a perfect celebration of commitment within a larger, loving family. And just to make sure everything’s right in the world, Brian revels in resplendent white, surrounded by an adoring White Wedding Party of his own.

Episode 212

Brian’s back from the White Party - he had a fabulous time! Of course, not as fabulous as last year, he tells Ben. They ran into each other, Ben was doing “research”. Only Justin privately confronts Brian later to get him to confess the truth. Brian must have slept with Ben, since he would have been one of the hottest guys at the Party.
Later at Woody’s, Emmett, Ted, Brian, Justin, Michael and Ben are all playing ‘Six Degrees of Pittsburgh’. That is, they’re all tied to each other somehow by following the trail of “I slept with that guy - who slept with that guy - who slept with that guy” and so on. It seems they’re all connected to each other, except for Michael and Ben. Not so, says Justin! Michael learns about Ben and Brian’s encounter the year before. Much to everyone else’s surprise, Michael seems fine with that.
Michael may not be the jealous type, but Ted sure is. He’s dying to crack in to the exclusive crowd of A-Gays, led by the notoriously hip Garth Racine. He manages to give Garth his card, and is completely ignored. Who needs him anyway? Ted, apparently. The next time they meet, Garth admits knowing all about Ted’s porn venture; he invites Ted over to one of his exclusive brunches and Ted jumps at the chance.
Debbie can’t stop thinking about the boy found dead in the dumpster behind the Liberty Diner. The cops are dragging their butts, so she decides to do something about it. She gets Justin to do a sketch and even gets Justin’s mom, Jennifer, to help investigate. After all, Jennifer knows what it’s like for a mother to worry about her gay son.
Michael, too, has something he can’t stop thinking about. Playing it cool was an act, he keeps picturing Ben and Brian together. He pressures Ben for details; Ben unwittingly breaks his heart by relating stories of the greatest sex ever. Ben knows it was just sex, not nearly as valuable as his intimacy with Michael, but Michael suddenly feels like going home. Ted and Emmett later explain to Ben that Michael’s always had an unrequited crush on Brian.
The search for clues about the missing twink lead Debbie and Jennifer all the way to a bathhouse. There, one of the shocked patrons actually remembers seeing the boy, and that he had an asthma inhaler. This leads Debbie to the local pharmacist, who, with prodding from his old friend Vic, gives Debbie a name. She takes the name straight to Detective Horvath and asks him to do something about it. Horvath is impressed with Debbie’s tenacity. Later, he makes the effort to show up on Debbie’s doorstep with sad news. The boy was an orphan, no one was missing him.
Ted musters all the courage he has to make a good impression at Garth’s A-Gay brunch. Things are going okay until Garth asks if he could meet one of Ted’s ‘performers’, Rex. Garth wants to use Ted as a pimp! Melanie explains to Ted that that’s how A-People work. They use each other for what they can get. Ted considers playing that game, and introduces Garth to Rex. Garth would love to extend the arrangement further, but Ted’s dignity forces him to walk away from Garth and out of the A-Gay scene.
Before Ben can confront Michael about his feelings for Brian, Michael confesses them freely. Michael’s sorry he tried to conceal something that did bother him. Ben’s had something with Brian that Michael never had, and Brian’s had some of what Michael’s having now with Ben. Getting these feelings out allow Michael to put them in the past - he jumps into bed with Ben, ready to live in the NOW.

Episode 213

Pittsburgh’s own drag queen diva, Divina Devore, has come to town! Ted approaches her about performing at his AIDS benefit, ‘Angels Over Pittsburgh’ but is turned down. Vic informs the boys that he knew Divina back in high school, when he was ‘Danny’. Armed with this personal connection, Michael goes back to see if he can change Divina’s mind – and succeeds! Divina couldn’t possibly say no to the son of Debbie – whom he dated back in high school!
Justin’s dad decides to no longer pay for Justin’s schooling. Justin decides he’ll pay his own way– and when he sees a Babylon go-go dancer counting his tips, Justin believes he’s found the way to do it. First, he has to convince Gary “the Sap” Sapperstein to let him dance at Babylon. One private dance later, Justin has the job—and shortly thereafter is dancing on the bar. Brian’s suspicious of Justin moving up the ranks so quickly – but keeps quiet and lets Justin make his own decisions.
Melanie and Lindsay want Gus to attend the best preschool. Convinced Gus was recently turned away because they applied as same sex parents, they convince Brian to play one half of the happy couple who will charm the next preschool into accepting ‘their’ son. Brian and Lindsay pull off their straight act brilliantly. So well (and conventional), in fact, that Gus is passed over in favor of a child with a more diverse background – one with same sex parents!
Michael and Ben pull out Debbie’s old yearbook to get a look at her former flame ‘Danny’ and come face to face with Michael’s spitting image. Michael immediately confronts his mother about his father’s identity. Debbie reminds him that his father, John Michael Novotny, the war hero, died saving his troops in Vietnam. Michael’s not convinced. Debbie goes to talk to Divina Devore – to tell her she’s a father. Michael’s catching on, and Debbie’s afraid she’ll lose his trust forever. Michael later confronts Danny (Divina), who responds by describing his profession, “The ‘truth’ is what you choose to believe. When I’m on stage, people believe I’m Divina Devore… because they want to.” Debbie gave Michael a father to believe in. The “truth” will depend on what Michael chooses to believe.

Episode 214

To earn some extra money for school, Justin lands a job as a stripper at Babylon. He works the hottest spot in the club, the “A” platform. With that comes the most attention, and the most money. Justin loves it. So much in fact that he is neglecting his schoolwork and spending all night, every night, partying. Brian feels Justin needs to get his priorities straight, but Justin is making so much money that he doesn’t care. He realizes he’s in too deep when a professor threatens to fail him if he doesn’t get his project in on time. He gets the boss at Babylon to give him the night off to finish his project, but he must work a private party in exchange. On the first leg of the trip, Emmett inducts George into the mile high club – they sneak into the bathroom to have sex. But, the excitement of sex in a small lavatory in the stratosphere overwhelms George. He thrusts into Emmett one last time.
Debbie still disapproves of Michael’s relationship with Ben. She doesn’t have to like everyone he’s dating, and he doesn’t have to like everyone she’s dating. Debbie goes out on a date with the cop she met at the diner, Carl (Detective Horvath). Debbie forgot how good it feels to date, and really begins to enjoy herself. But Michael can’t stand it. Driving home from Woody’s Brian and Ted suggest that it’s possible Michael can’t bare the thought of another man in Debbie’s life. Then a cop pulls them over. Michael doesn’t cooperate and gets taken downtown with Brian and Ted. After being locked up for the night, Detective Horvath has the charges dropped. This changes Michael’s impression of his mother’s relationship. He hopes she can do the same with his – but she can’t. She still can’t accept Michael’s involvement with someone who is HIV positive.

Emmett gets to deliver his own personal eulogy to George during his acceptance speech for “Best New Cummer” at a porn awards ceremony.

Instead, Melanie and Lindsay take Justin to a violin concert, where he discovers he has an interest in classical music – especially when it’s played by the gorgeous, and passionate, Ethan. The next day the entire gang shows up at Michael's apartment to show their support, minus Debbie. Michael insists he can handle this himself, but Brian can sense that this is beginning to take a toll on Michael, physically and mentally.
The next day Justin and Ethan have a romantic picnic style dinner at Ethan's run down, yet charming apartment. He tells Justin that his last boyfriend was all about the two of them going out to clubs and picking up guys but it wasn't what he wanted - he wanted someone to call his own. Justin stands by the belief that Brian imposed on him - "I don't believe in romance." But hearing Ethan's definition of the perfect relationship leads Justin to reconsider his.
Emmett and Melanie prepare for the legal battle with the Schickel Family over George's estate. The Schickel legal team makes Emmett and Mel an offer of one million dollars in exchange for his signature on a document that denies any relationship with George. Emmett decides that what he and George had was special and was never about money-he refuses the offer.
Michael hasn't told Debbie about Ben's illness. The last thing he wants to hear is, "I told you so". When Vic finally tells her what's happened, Debbie goes to the hospital with chicken broth for Ben. Michael arrives to find his mother tenderly caring for Ben. Ben eventually recovers, but he and Michael both know that things will never really be the same again.
Brian comes home to find Justin has prepared a romantic picnic style dinner like the one he had with Ethan. Brian would rather go out and tells Justin he's too young to settle down. Justin responds by telling Brian that he is too old to fuck around. A fight ensues and Brian leaves. Spurned, Justin goes out to find comfort in Ethan's arms.

Rage Issue #1: Story by Michael Novotny, Art by Justin Taylor. The first issue of their comic book is ready to be unveiled to the world. Brian's arranged a launch of Captain-Astro proportions at Babylon. Michael says he doesn't have to, considering Justin's secret affair with Ethan. Brian assures him things are under control. Besides, half the achievement is Michael's, and achievement needs to be celebrated.
Ethan meets a generous patron while busking — Brian. He unwittingly accepts Brian's invitation to discuss a potential advertising gig in the Liberty Diner. Justin walks in shortly thereafter. The happy surprise of seeing Brian turns to horrific shock when he sees who's with him. Ethan flees.
While he was in the hospital Michael encouraged Ben to dream of unattained goals. Now through that crisis, Ben has an opportunity to study at a Tibetan monastery. He wants to go for six months — but only with Michael's blessing. That's too long for Michael; but is it too late to go back on his word?
Ted laughs at Emmett's jokes. Ted admires Emmett's body at the gym. Ted even loves the way Emmett folds shirts at Torso. Emmett simply perceives these actions as "weird". Lindsay and Melanie accurately perceive them as "in love". The girls confront Ted with their suspicions and encourage him to confess his love. After all, they were friends before they were lovers. Ted tells all to Emmett over dinner, leaving him flabbergasted. Later, Emmett is forced to tell Ted that he's never seen him as more than a friend. Ted's humiliated.
Brian doesn't want to hear Justin's apology. He wants Justin to make a decision. Justin goes to Ethan — where he's rebuffed. Justin returns to Brian's loft, resigned to take his place in Brian's bed. Brian welcomes him back, pulls back the sheets, and possesses Justin — claiming what's his.
Michael feels too selfish to ask Ben to stay - he tells Ben to go to Tibet with his blessing. Debbie sees what Michael can't. Ben feels guilty about saddling Michael with an HIV-positive boyfriend. A six-month vacation will provide him with the perfect out. Debbie assures Ben that Michael is strong enough to go the distance. Is he?
The Rage launch is underway — and the co-creators aren't speaking. Justin found out that Michael told Brian about the affair. They need to reconcile-as do Emmett and Ted who need to regain the connection lost since Ted's embarrassment. Ben needs to act according to his feelings, not his fears. Finally, Justin needs to discern his own heart. Does he love Brian by choice or by default? If Ethan offers himself again, whom will he choose?

- Season Finale -

Episode 301

It's a week after the Rage party at Babylon when Brian punches Michael, knocking him to the ground. Michael takes us back to explain what happened. As we know, it was at the party that Justin chose the more romantic Ethan over Brian. Allegiances are split. Most side with Justin, concluding that it was Brian's inability to give Justin what he needed (romance, love, "proper" commitment) that drove him away. Michael, however, fumes that Justin cheated on Brian after everything Brian did for him. It looks likethere will never be a second issue of Rage. Ted and Emmett had left the Rage party to begin what everyone thinks will be the perfect relationship. At the diner the day after, they are grilled about what went on between them the night before. They respond ambiguously, letting everyone assume that things continued successfully in the bedroom. But the truth is that they fell asleep before consummating the relationship. After hearing the horror story of Vic's (Jack Wetherall) past attempt at turning a friendship into a relationship, a second try later on proves fruitless. They quickly decide to preserve their friendship, and possibly their lives and their sanity, by foregoing a romance. Now that his playmate is gone, Brian turns to Michael for companionship. Michael, of course, is happy to play but finds the timing awkward, since Michael's just invited Ben to move in with him. Ben was suddenly homeless, having already sublet his apartment when he was planning to go to Tibet. Melanie and Lindsay are having a party to celebrate the eight-year anniversary of when they got together. Their speech about how they found love only after risking their friendship finally encourages Ted and Emmett to take the plunge. After hearing that Brian won't be attending, a tentative Justin comes to the party with Ethan in tow. Debbie whisks him aside to tell him that, Brian or no Brian, he's still a part of the Liberty Avenue world. Brian, however, does show up. His first conversation with Justin since the break-up takes place in the bathroom, where Justin's sense of embarrassment is outweighed only by Brian's nonchalance. In fact, it seems Brian hardly cares at all, until Michael begins to rant about Justin's ingratitude and reveals he told him no one wants him around. After repeatedly telling Michael to be quiet, Brian punches him, sending him to the ground and shocking everyone. Brian is quickly asked to leave. He later finds Michael at the comic book shop, where they each apologize for their actions, and Brian urges him to continue collaborating with Justin on the comic book.

Episode 302

Adjusting to life without Brian means Justin must learn to adjust his spending. Tuition is due, and without Brian's help, Justin's going to have to drop out of school. His mother (Sherry Miller) doesn't make enough to cover it, and Ethan can't even pay his gas bill. Swallowing his pride, he asks his Dad (John Furey) for help, but Dad won't shell out the cash. That is, unless Justin feels like transferring to Dartmouth and becoming a lawyer… He could, as Michael suggests, make a few extra bucks working on another issue of Rage, but the thought of collaborating with Michael once again is almost unbearable. It's just as well, since Michael has his hands full with Brian, who these days spends his time fantasizing about Justin while having sex with other men. Later, Brian "kidnaps" Michael and drives him out to the suburbs for an underwear party, leaving Debbie, Vic, and Ben angry, hungry, and one short at dinner. This leads Ben to one conclusion: it's time to move out. Any troubles between Michael and Ben are more than balanced out by Ted and Emmett, whose doting affection for one another is becoming downright sickening. But the apple in this peaceful garden is Dijon, the spicy, beautiful, black flight attendant with whom Emmett had made plans before getting together with Ted. Although Emmett tries to control himself, he gives in to temptation, citing the "Grandfather Clause" as his rationale, by which all dates planned prior to the onset of a relationship are considered legitimate, and thus, "fuckable.'" Ted is furious when he finds out about the tryst, until he realizes that loving Emmett means accepting him for what he is - a man who's "never met a cock he didn't like." Melanie decides it's time to have a second child and assumes Lindsay will want to carry it, but being pregnant again isn't a part of Lindsay's immediate plans for her future. In Lindsay's opinion, if Melanie wants a sibling for Gus, perhaps she should carry it. Being pregnant has never been a part of Melanie's game plan but after speaking with Debbie about her experience giving birth to Michael, she begins to reevaluate. At the Bursar's office, Justin discovers that his tuition's been paid, and Ethan leaps for joy at Mr. Taylor's sudden and unexpected generosity. Justin knows better and later confronts Brian about it. Brian maintains that they have an agreement in place: Brian will pay Justin's tuition, and Justin will pay him back, with interest, at some point in the future. Justin reluctantly agrees to accept his help.

Episode 303

Lindsay persuades Brian to help with the Gay and Lesbian Center carnival. Brian comes with corporate sponsors-and conditions. At first, the Center balks at his request for 20% off the top until Lindsay explains that 80% of more-than-they-ever-dreamed-of is a lot better than 100% of nothing.
Brian commissions Justin to design the poster for the fundraiser, but Justin won't be attending the event. He has his own party to attend-a wine & cheese with Ethan's musician friends. They're quite a different crowd from the Liberty Avenue gang he's come to know, and he's nervous about fitting in.
In addition to Brian's services, Melanie (along with Lindsay) asks for his sperm. Mel's corrective surgery has been a success, and she's finally able to conceive a child. Due to his less-than-favorable feelings about Melanie, Brian refuses-at first. But after talking to Michael about it, he relents; after all, what better way to piss off heterosexuals than for gay people to have children?
Things are back on track again between Michael and Ben, but all is certainly not well. When Paul, the ex-boyfriend who infected Ben with AIDS, dies of the disease, Ben begins to ponder his own mortality. To fight off the demons, he dedicates himself to his body, spending more and more time at the gym. Fearing that his efforts are not enough to ward off the body-wasting effects of the virus, he discreetly turns to steroids.
Debbie and Horvath are getting more serious, but Debbie's gone a long time without physical intimacy and is having performance anxiety. Emmett comes to the rescue; he and Ted show up at her house to teach her how to give the perfect blowjob! Her oral prowess is so first-rate, Horvath assumes she's far more experienced than she's let on. This, in turn, leads an insulted Debbie to kick him out of her house. Hearing about the misassumption, Ted and Emmett confess to Horvath.

Episode 304

Who's going to be the father of Melanie's baby? She hates Brian, Justin's too young, Ben has HIV, Ted's boring, and Emmett's, well, Emmett. So, after much consideration, the answer is Michael. He's kind, good with kids, and most importantly, has a good heart. Even more thrilled with the decision than Michael is Debbie, who never thought she'd get to be a grandmother. Though Ben is happy for Michael, the situation reinforces the fact that he'll never get to be a father. Instead, he concentrates on his body, as the combination of increased workouts and steroids makes him bigger and harder than ever.
But Michael won't be the donor until he and Melanie can iron out exactly what that will mean. Michael wants to be a father, if not in the traditional sense, at least inasmuch as being there as his child grows up - something he never had. Melanie wants a signed contract making sure Michael has no obligations, as well as no rights, to the baby.
Brian is forced to babysit his demon-spawned, homophobic, twelve-year-old nephew, John, when his sister leaves him with him for the day. John doesn't like Brian or his lifestyle. When Brian catches John taking money from his wallet, John stuffs the wad of cash down his pants. Brian reaches in to take it back and punishes him with a "swirly." John vows revenge. Brian doesn't realize how serious he is until the police show up at his door and take him in for questioning; John has accused him of molesting him.
Meticulous, anal-retentive Ted invites cluttered, absent-minded Emmett to move in with him, and while they may work well as boyfriends, they're oil and water as roomies. Emmett moves out almost immediately, forcing the two of them to more closely examine their relationship. Finally, Ted decides that instead of Emmett moving into his condo, the two of them should buy a house together.
Lindsay confronts Melanie, telling her it's not Michael's interference she fears; it's losing control that scares her. And having a baby means losing some control and just trusting that things will turn out. Melanie considers this and, finally, relents - Michael will not only be the donor, but the acknowledged father as well.
Brian's family has turned against him. His sister Claire believes her son, and even Brian's mother thinks the worst of him. Justin stands by Brian and confronts John. He discovers that John is wearing Brian's shell bracelet, which he stole from Brian when he took the cash. Justin brings this to the attention of Brian's family and Detective Horvath. Although John claims he bought it, Justin proves that it is indeed Brian's. Faced with this proof, John recants.

Episode 305

The Pittsburgh mayoral race is on, and Police Chief Jim Stockwell, the Republican candidate, is neck-and-neck with the Democrat. Debbie and Vic make it their mission to register the denizens of Liberty Avenue to vote, but they're confronted with cynicism and apathy on every front. Brian pitches his ad firm to Stockwell's campaign, and wins the account. Needless to say, this bothers Debbie since she considers Stockwell a homophobe, but Vance Gardner is a good deal happier. After all, a lot of doors will be opened for the company if Stockwell wins. In an attempt to reinvent Stockwell's image, Brian tells him he just need to find something that'll make him "pop".
Ethan comes in a disappointing second in the long-awaited Heifetz competition. Regardless of his finish, however, his obvious talent and striking good looks garner the interest of talent rep. Glen Stone. Only one thing stands in the way of papers being signed and Glen making him a star: he wants Ethan to stay in the closet. To Justin's relief, Ethan refuses to lie about who he is or what the two of them share. It's a noble gesture, but as Brian tells him when he confronts him busking for change on a street corner, "there's nothing noble about being poor."
Michael has his own performance issues to worry about. Melanie is only ovulating for three days, and the time pressure, the sterile sperm clinic rooms designed for heterosexuals, and Ben's angry refusals to help all contribute to leaving Michael's hopes for insemination this month sadly flaccid. But a visit to Ted's porn warehouse provides a quick fix when one of the "routines" inspires Michael to grab a cup and run. Melanie and Lindsay begin trying to conceive a second child, with the help of Michael's contribution.
Ted and Emmett's differences emerge when Jennifer, their real estate agent, takes them house hunting. They see two possibilities: Ted's ideal (cold, contemporary, economical) and Emmett's (cozy, decrepit, charming). After a bit of argument, Emmett agrees to go with Ted's choice. Ted makes a down payment - on Emmett's dream home. In the end, Emmett's happiness is more important to Ted than any house.

Episode 306

Brian's first act as Stockwell's ad man is to change his image-stop selling him as a hero and start selling him as an ordinary guy in a position to do great things. While filming a commercial of him playing basketball, Brian keeps the camera rolling as Stockwell lifts his shirt, revealing a well-built torso. The candidate's aides argue against using the revealing shot, but Brian responds that sex sells. The risk pays off-Stockwell leaps ahead in the polls. Brian tells him to keep his face in the news.
Stockwell continues his crusade against drugs, debauchery, and everything else that makes Liberty Avenue fun. After Debbie warns Ted that porn businesses are being targeted by the police, he readies his warehouse for an inspection. He and his assistant Eddie ensure that they're up to code in every conceivable way. If there's a surprise inspection, Ted'll be ready.
One thing for which Ted won't be ready is Emmett wearing pressed chinos and penny loafers. Emmett has undertaken the decoration of their new house in true Emmett-style, from dyed lavender ostrich-skin upholstery to slave boy lamps on the bar. But when Sunny, their shiny, white-bread neighbor, invites them to a welcome-to-the-neighborhood cocktail party at her house, Emmett reconsiders his flamboyancy. He's always dreamed of living in the house on the hill, and now that he is, he's not sure he wants to be the fag next store. Ted, however, encourages Emmett to be himself and dress as such, and the party goes wonderfully.
Michael confronts Ben about his steroid use. Ben admits to it, but claims he's just trying them for a cycle to help prevent body wasting. And Michael can't say he doesn't appreciate Ben's newer, bigger muscles. But when Brian spots Ben buying steroids in the gym locker room, Michael confronts him again. Ben angrily responds that Michael can't understand what it's like to have HIV, and maybe he should be dating someone who's positive and can.
Ethan's agreement to remain closeted presents difficulties when Justin and Daphne interrupt an interview of his. He smoothly covers that Justin is just his cousin, leaving a furious Daphne to complain that Brian, at least, never asked him to lie about who he is. But Ethan's career is moving forward; a violinist at the Harrisburg Symphony is hospitalized and he's asked to be a replacement.

Episode 307

Although Ted was unaware that his assistant was three months shy of his eighteenth birthday, the court declares its intention to prosecute him for "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" to the fullest extent of the law. He's out on $50,000 bail, but who knows how long he'll have to spend in prison after he's convicted? Stockwell has gotten quite a boost in the polls since Ted's arrest and he plans on riding the trial right into the Mayor's office. Desperate, and with no other alternatives, Ted seeks out the help of the one person he knows who has Stockwell's ear - Brian.
When Ethan returns triumphantly from his successful concert debut in Harrisburg, Justin confronts him - he was at the concert, and he saw Ethan leave with an attractive, admiring fan. Ethan dismisses the incident as a harmless conversation about grad schools with some heterosexual music student. Justin accepts this explanation, until the "music student" shows up at their door, a huge bouquet of roses in hand.
As Ben's muscles continue to build, so do his 'roid rage and the tension between him and Michael. At a family dinner, Vic's new boyfriend Rodney, also positive, speculates on the challenges presented in dating someone negative - he's never been able to do it successfully. Finally, frustrated with Ben's reluctance to quit steroids and the difficulties they face in a negative/positive relationship, Michael makes one last, dramatic stand.
Although a number of pregnancy tests have come back negative, and, as Lindsay reminds her, it usually takes ten months for successful fertilization, Melanie doesn't believe she's not pregnant. And she's right - she is. Michael's daunted by the prospect of being a dad, but Brian assures him he'll be great at it.
Brian refuses to help Ted, and he remains unmoved after a separate entreaty from Emmett. But in the end, he does convince Stockwell to drop his crusade. Ted will be hit with a monster fine, he'll lose his house and everything he has, and he'll never be able to operate a porn business again, but he'll stay out of prison. When he thanks Brian for his help, Brian responds that he did it for Stockwell, not him. Debbie can't figure out why he doesn't take credit for his good deeds; Justin points out that he believes in action, not words.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is Ethan, who blusters out an apology for his less-than-noble actions. After all, he contends, Brian slept with lots of other guys when they were together. But, Justin counters, Brian never promised him anything; Ethan did. The relationship over once and for all, Brian finds Justin in the back room of Babylon. As they get laid together, the two of them make eye contact, and keep it the entire time.

Episode 308

Ever since ending things with Ethan, Justin has been crashing on Daphne's couch and bemoaning his worst decision ever - breaking up with Brian. But how to get him back? Daphne reveals that she once successfully pursued a former crush by maintaining a presence anyplace he might go. Cut to:
Justin is the new art department intern at Vangard Adverstising. The fact that he got the job without Brian's help doesn't mitigate Brian's anger that he applied without consulting him. Brian suspects the real reason he took the job, just as he suspects the real reason he finds him at Babylon, ready to buy him a drink. And when, at long last, Brian does begin to reaccept Justin as a daily presence in his life, Justin commits a sin considerably more egregious than his affair with Ethan - he contradicts him at a meeting. The client gives him kudos for his initiative and good taste; Brian gives him a pink slip.
Lindsay nervously begins work at the Sidney Bloom Art Gallery. Our new career woman gets off to such an impressive start, selling a painting to a client who never buys anything, that Mr. Bloom puts her in charge of planning the next opening with the condescending, demanding, and unimaginative Florinda Zeckendorff. The woman's "can't-do" attitude prompts Lindsay to fire her, leaving her 48 hours to plan a party with no planner.
Emmett, in need of cash since Ted's business went south, agrees to try his hand planning the party. Besides, he can use the challenge - his most impressive recent achievement has been convincing pharmaceutical-phobic Ted, discouraged at his unsuccessful job hunt and in extreme pain from a back injury at the gym, to bite the bullet and take a Vicodin.
Stockwell's campaign to clean up Liberty Avenue has merely swept the problems under the rug and the hustlers under Michael and Ben's bedroom window. Frustrated with the noise, Ben confronts them, one of whom, a youth named Hunter, offers his "services" to him: condom-less sex goes as high as $200. Ben is profoundly affected by this and, after finding him asleep in their doorway, reaches out. He buys him a meal at the diner, rescues him from a beating, puts him up for a night, and slips him $100 as he leaves. After Michael observes that they "did more for him than most people," Ben responds that what they did was "buy off our conscience for a hundred bucks."
Emmett's Moulin Rouge theme for the opening is a hit, ensuring both him and Lindsay bright job prospects for a good time to come. Melanie and Ted observe that, for the first time in their relationships, they're not the providers.
And Justin asks Brian to take him back, into the company and into his life. After all, he now knows what he can expect from Brian, and he wants it. Brian accepts, and the two make love for the first time since the split.

Episode 309

Stockwell has tightened the noose around Liberty Avenue, and everyone's feeling the squeeze. Everyone, that is, except Brian, who is looking forward to reaping the rewards (big contacts and a job in New York) for his position on the campaign. Undercover cops patrol Babylon, guarding against backroom "activities". But this doesn't stop Brian, who just considers the danger a turn on. And Woody's is shut down by Pittsburgh P.D. for lewd and immoral behavior after a dancer bares all at a charity stripping event. But, as Brian points out, they pay a quick fine and reopen a few days later. It's only when Stockwell discovers that Brian is gay and fires him for it that Brian begins to feel the heat.
Debbie organizes a rally opposing the Woody's raid, denouncing Stockwell on the news for his fascism and homophobia. Horvath doesn't escape her wrath either, even though he had nothing to do with the operation. As a result, Stockwell's numbers take a dive, as does Debbie and Horvath's relationship.
Ted is now regularly combining alcohol and pain medication. After all, a chemical-induced stupor looks a whole lot better than his real world these days. Michael tries to get him a job as an assistant bookkeeper at the Q-Mart, but his reputation puts a stop to that. Emmett, whose party-planning career is taking off, hires him as a bartender for an upcoming event. Ted works with a smile until he finds himself catering to Garth Racine, an "A-list" gay socialite with whom he was acquainted in his former life.
Melanie is trying to lighten her workload as she plans out the rest of her pregnancy. But when the State Supreme Court grants an appeal to the gay civil liberties case on which she's been working a long time, she finds it difficult to let go of her professional responsibilities. After shifting enough of her new, familial responsibilities back to Lindsay, Lindsay finally blows up, feeling she's neglecting her family for her career. Melanie suggests getting a part-time nanny or having a friend help out, but none of these options are acceptable to Lindsay. Even though straight people do that sort of thing all the time, Lindsay contends that they need to be just a little bit better.
Debbie apologizes to Horvath for blaming him for Stockwell's actions. But Horvath can't take her fiery rants about the police chief and refuses to take her back.
Stockwell, on the other hand, has no problem taking Brian back. In a press conference, he refutes the allegations that he's a homophobe, emphasizing that even certain members of the gay community support him. As proof, Brian, stands by his side.

Episode 310

Stockwell's fascist initiatives to clean up Pittsburgh have taken the liberty out of Liberty Avenue. The bathhouses have been closed, as have the sex clubs and the video arcades. After being hassled by a cop, Justin reacts to the new policies through his art; he designs posters comparing Stockwell to Hitler and pastes them up all over Pittsburgh. Although he tries to keep his activities covert, Brian catches him making copies in the ad agency one night and orders him to stop; he's not just screwing with Stockwell, he's screwing with him. Stockwell is furious about the sabotage operation, but Brian tells him to use it to his advantage - to go on television and show that he's in favor of free speech.
Ted's life continues its slow downward spiral when he's turned away from the gym for having insufficient funds in his bank account. Emmett decides to take him away for the weekend for a much-needed vacation. But when he's called away at the last minute to plan a party, he insists that Ted go alone. On his way to the B & B, Ted passes the Paradise Motel, which, according to an email invitation he'd received, is hosting a major sex party that weekend. He decides to take a look.
Seeing Melanie's sonogram is all it takes for Michael's paternal, protective instincts to kick in. Adding to his concerns is the fact that Melanie insists on continuing with her caseload and all the stress and late hours it entails. His anxiety is almost cute, until Melanie catches him spying on her outside the grocery store; he's been stalking her on the off chance something might happen to her and the baby. Although she makes him promise to back off, his persistence saves the day when she's hit by a wave of pain in her office lobby at night. Michael gets her to a hospital right away, ensuring her and the baby's health. The incident opens Melanie's eyes to the fact that her baby is more important to her than being part of some case. She decides to start taking it easy.
Ben gets a call that his nephew is in the hospital with a kidney infection, which is particularly surprising given that he doesn't have a nephew. When he shows up, he finds Hunter, who has taken him up on his request to call him if he's ever in trouble. He's told the hospital staff that Ben's his uncle so that he won't be put back into the foster care system. Ben reluctantly agrees to go along with it, even paying Hunter's several-thousand-dollar hospital bill, until the boy's ingratitude prompts Ben to reconsider his generosity.
Ted's relaxing vacation turns into a crazy, non-stop orgy at the Paradise Motel after a respectable-looking doctor convinces him to try a bump of crystal meth. Exhausted, he returns home to Emmett, and promptly lies about his weekend.
Brian's advice to Stockwell works spectacularly, helping him to garner the support of several gay organizations, including the Gay and Lesbian Center. That night, Stockwell's crusade against Liberty Avenue affects him personally when he finds the backroom of Babylon closed.

Episode 311

The backroom of Babylon has been closed, and after an unhappy attempt to recreate the golden days of yore in the back of a freezing cold eighteen-wheeled big rig, Brian and Justin are reduced to humping like heterosexuals - at home. Stockwell has certainly cleaned up Liberty Avenue, and the conservative gay community is behind him. On Brian's advice, he tries to take advantage of his newfound popularity by speaking at the Gay and Lesbian Center. There, Justin, along with Daphne, Melanie, Lindsay, Jennifer and Debbie, ambush him. They question him about the multitude of unsolved hate crimes in the gay community, including the murder of Jason Kemp, the boy found in Debbie's dumpster in Season Two. It's a PR nightmare for Stockwell, and he soon realizes that it's Justin-who he recognizes as the art intern at Vangard-that has caused it. Putting the puzzle pieces together, Stockwell confronts Vance with his suspicion that Brian is trying to sabotage his campaign.
Ben and Michael comb the streets and back alleys of Pittsburgh looking for Hunter to tell him he has HIV. When they finally find him, he's surprisingly indifferent about the danger to his life as well as his johns'. Ben offers to help but Hunter doesn't respond until he discovers that Ben is positive too. He accompanies Ben home to warm up, have some soup, and crash for the night. The next morning, Ben tells him that he's welcome to sleep there anytime, as long as he's there by midnight. Michael, concerned about Ben's feelings, asks Hunter if he's planning to return. Hunter tells him what Ben can do with his charity!
Melanie and Lindsay decide to entrust Ted with managing Gus's college fund. After all, he's responsible, he's good with money, and he really needs something to focus on these days. But while researching investments online, he's IM'd by Mark Burgess, the doctor who introduced him to crystal meth at the Paradise Motel. He invites Ted to a party that night, and, despite his best efforts to make alternative plans, Ted gives in to the temptation. It's at the party, among his new friends and second dose of crystal, that he hears about the White Party in Palm Springs that weekend. But where to get a few thousand dollars?
Emmett is frantic when he realizes that Ted has disappeared, and even more so when he discovers that he's drained Gus's entire college fund. He and Michael search everywhere, until finally, a tweaked out partier at Babylon explains where Ted has gone.
After confirming his intent to destroy Stockwell's image, including his involvement in Justin's agit prop poster campaign, Vance fires Brian. When Debbie hears about Brian's secret role in trying to bring down Stockwell, she tells him how proud she is, and they connect for the first time in a very long while. That night, once again looking for somewhere to meet outside the bedroom, Brian shows up at Babylon with a crowbar. "Backroom's reopened, boys!"

Episode 312

Michael doesn't like living with Hunter. The runaway is sloppy, unappreciative of Ben's generosity, and worst of all, time alone with Ben is a near-impossibility. He's also apprehensive about leaving the hustler alone in the apartment, but he can only bring Hunter to work with him so often. So he decides to take a chance and give him a key to the place. But his faith in Hunter sours when he and Ben return home to find him with a trick in their living room.
Hunter has another surprise in store, this time for Debbie. In the diner, he sees the picture she's put up of Jason Kemp, the boy who was found dead in the diner's dumpster. Hunter reveals that he knew Jason, that he was a hustler as well, and that he saw the trick he went off with the night he was killed. The trick was a cop. Debbie brings this information to Horvath, who tells her that Stockwell has cold-cased the file and there's nothing he can do about it. She brings the news to Brian, but Brian is done playing the hero.
Ted returns from the White Party. Emmett has been waiting helplessly at home, worried out of his mind, while hearing tales of his formerly docile accountant boyfriend absconding to Palm Springs with the five thousand dollars Melanie and Lindsay have entrusted to him for Gus' college fund. In an effort to cover up his thievery, Emmett has replaced the missing cash with the money he'd been planning to use for a new oven for his business. Despite his anger, Emmett wants to believe Ted when he apologizes for his mistake and promises never to do it again. And it looks like he might mean it, as he comes clean to Melanie and Lindsay about his actions. Melanie, however, doubts the sincerity of his reformation, and hostilities erupt between Emmett and the women.
After some prompting from Justin, Brian reconsiders his inaction and has Hunter take him to the bar frequented by the cop who killed Jason Kemp. Hunter spots the cop-a man named Rikert. Brian starts a conversation with him. Rikert reveals that he worked with Stockwell for 15 years. Later, Horvath tells Brian that he'll need more information than that to reopen the case; he'll need hard evidence, like DNA.
Emmett takes some time off from work to spend a quiet night home with Ted. But Ted has other plans, pulling out a souvenir from Palm Springs — a vial of crystal meth. He begs Emmett to try it with him.
Justin, dressed as a hustler, accompanies Brian to the bar to try to get a DNA sample — like a cigarette butt — from Rikert. When Hunter expresses his desire to help, Brian tells him to go home. But Hunter's not going home that night; his crush on Brian and longing to prove himself to him prompt him to stay out to pick up one particular trick — Rikert.

Episode 313

Having slept with the cop who killed Jason Kemp, Hunter presents Brian with the cop's name (Kenneth Rikert) and a condom full of semen for a DNA test. Horvath, who reveals to Brian that Rikert was Stockwell's partner before retiring from the force, has the semen tested - it matches the sample from Jason's autopsy. Despite his promise to reopen the case, however, he refuses to act. As he explains to Debbie later, he's too close to retirement to risk losing everything by incriminating cops.
Michael and Ben are furious with Hunter for picking up Rikert and endangering his own life. Ben, at long last, concedes to Michael that they're simply not getting through to the boy, so they should just ask him to go. Hunter overhears their discussion.
Despite Ted's pleas, Emmett refuses to do crystal with him again, but now he can't keep up with Ted's accompanying sexual appetite. He does grant one (rudely made) demand-to throw a party for Ted and six of his "new" friends. On the night of the event, the men arrive at the apartment to an exquisite feast, only to ignore it, remove their clothes, and get to the drugs. They don't even notice when Emmett leaves.
The dean of PIFA is furious with Justin for making the anti-Stockwell posters and insists that he apologize to the Disciplinary Committee or face suspension. He's convinced to do it by Brian, not for the committee's sake but for his own. But when the committee demands he apologize to both Gardner Vance and Stockwell, he's simply unable to abandon his principles. The committee suspends him.
Before Michael and Ben are able to ask Hunter to leave, they find that he's risen early, combed his hair, washed the dishes, and declared his intention to go back to school. It seems they've finally gotten through to him after all. There are other surprises in store when they take him to register at school and he's forced to reveal his real name (James Hunter Montgomery), and his birthday (the previous Tuesday). Michael and Ben throw him a belated surprise party, where he meets the rest of his Liberty Avenue family.
Emmett makes the decision to confront Ted once and for all about his drug use. He shows up at the apartment to find it completely wrecked, the partiers leaving, and his food burnt and untouched. To make things worse, Ted berates him for being rude and embarrassing him in front of his guests. He has no intention of quitting crystal, and, the relationship now over, he kicks Emmett out of the apartment. Melanie and Lindsay offer Emmett a bed at their house until he finds a new place.
Soon after confronting Rikert with his evidence, Brian is invited to Stockwell's office. The candidate offers him a job on his campaign once again, along with all the perks that come with it. When Brian directs Horvath's attention to Stockwell's "serendipitous" timing, Horvath reveals that Rikert has killed himself - just before he was about to bring him in for questioning. And without Rikert, it seems that the mayoral race is decided. Stockwell will be elected.

Episode 314

As the mayoral election fast approaches, Stockwell's victory seems imminent, and the cops guarding Liberty Avenue and Babylon against "unseemliness" portend the gloomy future of gay life in Pittsburgh. Justin joins Vic and Debbie's last ditch efforts to hand out flyers promoting Stockwell's opponent, but Brian takes an even more active role. He makes a commercial implicating Stockwell in the cover-up of Jason Kemp's murder. When Deekins (Stockwell's opponent) refuses to air it, fearful that it might look desperate or, if it's untrue, damage his campaign, the airtime for the influential ad is purchased by "Concerned Citizens for the Truth". It's only later that Justin learns this altruistic and otherwise unheard of group has only one member - Brian - and he's put himself one hundred thousand dollars in debt to play the commercial every hour until the election.
A mysterious woman shows up at Ben and Michael's door. She's Hunter's mother, and she wants him back. When the runaway gave his name to register at the high school, his mother, who'd been searching for him, was alerted and given their address. She tells the men that Hunter is furious at her for giving him up when he was younger, but Hunter has a very different story, revealing that she was the one who started him in prostitution. The men refuse to give him over to his mother, and when she later arrives with the cops, Michael and Hunter flee.
Ted shows up at Melanie and Lindsay's house, where Emmett has been staying, and asks him to come back to him, promising to quit using crystal meth. But Emmett refuses to return. At Babylon later, Brian tells Emmett he needs to think of Ted as already being dead, and he can't let him bring him down with him. Elsewhere in the club, Ted dances with his new friends; he feels abandoned by Emmett and takes solace in the fact that these men are the ones who can really take care of him. And they do. He wakes up from a drug-induced stupor to find them all shouting and jeering at videotape of the whole group gang-banging him while he was passed out. Realizing he's hit bottom, Ted checks himself into rehab.
Melanie's pregnancy is progressing normally. But when Lindsay shows her a blanket for the baby, Melanie angrily refuses it, citing Jewish superstition that makes it unlucky to buy something for a baby before it's born. In fact, Melanie's mother miscarried after a gift was bought for her baby, and she was at the exact same point in her pregnancy that Melanie is now - just before the end of her first trimester.
Brian's ads, in addition to Debbie's loud mouth, have turned out the vote on Liberty Avenue in record numbers, and they've made a difference. Stockwell loses! Exalted, everyone pours out to the street to celebrate. Melanie arrives with even more good news - her first trimester is over, and she and the baby are both healthy. Brian comments to Justin that he's lost everything: his job, his money, and all his possessions. But Justin reminds him that there's at least one thing he hasn't lost. They embrace, and the celebration goes on.

- Season Finale -

Episode 401

Brian's broke. His anti-Stockwell commercial campaign, while effective in ruining the homophobic candidate's bid to be Pittsburgh's next mayor, has been just as effective in ruining Brian. The expensive airtime has put him deep into debt, forcing him to sell his possessions and, quite possibly, his loft. His friends want to help him but Brian refuses to be a charity case, insisting on taking Justin out for expensive drinks and buying lunch for all his friends. He even turns down Vance's offer of his old job back when he realizes that Vangard really wants his clients, not him, and decides to open his own company - "Kinnetik" - aggressively pursuing his old clients to follow him. Brian's a guy who doesn't like giving up control.
Meanwhile, Michael and Hunter are holed up in a seedy motel room, hiding from Hunter's mother, who is petitioning the courts to have him returned to her. The risk of losing Hunter to the woman who first pushed him into prostitution is enough to keep Michael on the run, until Hunter starts doing tricks to make ends meet. The pair returns to Pittsburgh to face Hunter's mother and a custody hearing. Melanie represents the runaway, but to no avail - the judge orders him returned to his mother.
As difficult as it is for Emmett to see Ted in rehab, it's even more difficult for Ted to be seen. Ted covers his embarrassment with false bravado and Emmett reacts to his blithe attitude with an admonition to take things slowly, which only ends up offending and further embarrassing Ted. To make things worse, Emmett meets Ted's rehab counselor: Blake! Later, when Emmett stops by Ted's apartment to pick up a few things, he finds Ted, sitting on the sofa in the dark, having just quit rehab and feeling sorry for himself. He looks to Emmett for comfort, but Emmett refuses to be sucked in again. If Ted wants to kill himself, fine, but Emmett won't waste pity on him. He leaves.
Lindsay and Melanie have thrown a lot of benefits for charity over the years, but after Justin tells them how Brian sacrificed everything to save Liberty Avenue, they know the charity they really want to help. Justin drags Brian to Woody's, where he discovers the celebration in his honor and is presented with a check to help "The Concerned Citizens for the Truth" in "their" time of need. And for once, Brian swallows his pride and accepts.

Episode 402

Brian decides it's time for him to start his own business rather than make money for someone else but he finds building a client base is not as simple as he'd hoped. His former assistant at Vangard, Cynthia, tells him that Vance is presenting Brian's AIDS drug campaign for Remson Pharmaceuticals. She and Justin beg him to challenge Vance. Brian comes up with the idea of honesty for a campaign-a totally new approach to marketing AIDS medications-and interrupts Vance's meeting to pitch his ideas to the drug company.
Believing his addiction is under control, Ted tries to convince himself, as well as Blake, that he's ready to leave rehab. As he prepares to walk out the door, he asks Blake if he can call him if he hits a rough spot. Blake says yes, but reminds him that it can't become personal. Later, Ted begins his re-entry into life with a visit to the diner. Everyone's excited to see him, but as they continue their daily routines, he's left alone—with Brian. Brian commends Ted—on sinking so low—but supportively reminds him that now the only place he has to go is up. Back at his condo, Ted is ridding his house of drug paraphernalia and any other triggers when Melanie and Lindsay show up to return his plants. Ted reassures the girls that he's fine. But the re-entry back into a sober life is proving more difficult than Ted had imagined. His friends don't trust him and are awkward around him. Lost, he calls on Blake who reassures him that he's doing fine—it's all going to take some getting used to—for both him and his friends.
Justin visits Darren (Shanda Leer), the drag queen we saw bashed at the end of the last episode. He's brought him food and a sympathetic ear. Darren wants the bashers caught and hopes they rot in jail. Later at the Gay & Lesbian Center, Melanie and Ben lead a meeting to discuss ways to protect their community in light of the recent bashing. As the crowd considers some of the traditional methods of protection, a participant-Cody Bell-speaks up with a different point of view. He believes that gay people get bashed because straight people know they can get away with it and he suggests gay people will not be safe until they learn to physically fight back. Justin's curiosity is piqued. Justin later learns that the police caught Darren's bashers. But Darren has changed his mind—he no longer wants to identify them and refuses to look at a lineup. Darren fears that if he does, and the bashers don't go to jail, they'll come looking for him. Justin tries to get Darren to reconsider.
With his pilot light out after his experience with Ted, Emmett decides to attend a "Faerie gathering" where he can rediscover his fabulousness. Michael accompanies him, with some hesitation, but when they arrive at the Faerie gathering it's Emmett who wants to turn around and leave. Michael starts to have fun while Emmett feels hopeless. No one there can help him. He's resigned himself to his misery when he happens upon a wise old Faerie who explains that it's the power of being a Faerie that gives them the will to survive—it's just that sometimes they forget they have it. Emmett begins to turn his negative experience into a positive one and his flame is rekindled.

Episode 403

Out of rehab, Ted and Blake discuss what Ted will do with his life now. When Ted confesses that he'd always dreamed of being an opera singer, Blake offers encouragement. After a nervous audition, Ted gets a job as a singing waiter at an Italian restaurant. Michael, after making several attempts to reconnect with Ted, finds out about Ted's new gig from Vic and gets the gang together for a surprise visit to the restaurant in a show of support. Tired of everyone offering support for Ted and not him, Emmett refuses to go. As he's about to sing, Ted spots the gang at the restaurant and freezes. He's furious that they came to see him unannounced—and uninvited.

Much to his surprise, she's completely supportive of the decision. Hiding her disappointment, Debbie cheerfully goes through the motions of helping Rodney and Vic prepare to move.
Cody initiates Justin into the Pink Posse. As they patrol Liberty Avenue, two homophobes shout insults at a gay couple from their car. Justin goes back to the loft excited about the retaliation but Brian grows concerned with the Posse's motives when he discovers the bruise on Justin's back. He warns Justin that he shouldn't go out looking for trouble.

Melanie feels confident she will win her current case and get Jeanette and Anna custody of their son. Melanie believes she can overturn the verdict, especially since the judge who's hearing the case has a gay friendly track record. She is outraged at the suggestion - that a straight male replace her-and has no intention of giving up the case.

Marty balks at the content, and says if they're going to go with a gay theme they're going to have to cut the gay sex. Justin politely explains that they won't compromise Rage's sexuality. They prefer to remain true to their vision.

Episode 414

The Liberty Ride arrives at the US border. Michael and Ben have filled out a joint immigration form—just as all married couples do—however US immigration won't recognize their Canadian marriage. Michael and Ben had expected this but attempted to cross the border as a married couple to prove a point. Debbie is outraged. When Horvath asks Debbie about their wedding plans, she explains that she loves him, but she won't get married in a country where her son can't.
Ted's 12-step birthday falls during the Ride, and he's begun to feel the anxiety he'd expected after being away from his support system in Pittsburgh. Emmett finds a local meeting that they can attend and then rejoin the ride. But Ted's anxiety is only fueled when they get lost in the woods. Emmett calms him by setting up an impromptu meeting—Emmett will be his audience. Reluctantly, Ted speaks. He thanks his good friends for standing by him.
Back in Pittsburgh, Lindsay and Melanie discuss where Lindsay will go after the baby is born. The conversation is civilized but cool - until Melanie's water breaks. Her attitude towards Lindsay shifts when she's in labor at the hospital and asks Lindsay to stay with her. Michael and Ben arrive in Pittsburgh and receive the news that his daughter, Jenny Rebecca has been born! Later, Melanie asks Lindsay if she still plans to move out. It's painful for her, but Lindsay explains, it's what they agreed to.
During the Ride, as a hot cyclist distracts Brian he loses control of his bike and goes careening off the side of the road. Even with a broken collarbone and orders from the doctor to go home, he still plans on finishing the ride. As he struggles through with great difficulty, he explains to Michael that the ride symbolizes his personal challenge. If he finishes, he can beat anything. Including cancer.
In Hollywood, Justin and Brett Keller receive word that Rage has gotten the green light from the studio! Brett offers Justin a job as assistant art director on the film - which means he'd need to be in Hollywood for the next 6-8 months. Justin accepts. He gets back to Pittsburgh in time to see Brian finish the ride. Later, Brian tells Justin he's had time to think about what he'd do differently if he survived cancer. He wants Justin to move in with him.
The Liberty Ride was a great success! The riders and supporters have gathered at the Liberty House Hospice where they present the hospice with a check for $732,000, saving it from closing. In Vic's honor, the hospice is renamed the Vic Grassi House.

With Justin still in Hollywood making the "Rage" movie, Brian is planning to pay him a surprise visit until Justin tells Brian that the that he may have to stay for a few more months. Brian assumes that that one month will turn into six and before you know it, Justin will be gone for years. Brian senses it may be time to move on and cancels his trip.
Michael discovers Melanie and Lindsay's tenth anniversary is approaching. He plans a surprise party to celebrate, but the surprise is on him—and everyone else—when the girls reveal at the party that they've split up. Lindsay and Gus have moved to a small apartment. Feeling angry and betrayed, Michael tells them when he agreed to be the baby's father it was because he knew Jenny Rebecca would be brought up in a loving home—not in some time-sharing arrangement with two sniping parents. He and Ben return home to their apartment only to find loud music and guys partying across the hall—a scene that has become the norm. Realizing their building has turned into a gay dorm, Ben asks Michael to consider moving to the suburbs. Michael isn't sure he wants to leave but after he discovers that Brian knew about Melanie and Lindsay's separation and didn't tell him, he thinks it might be time for a change.
On a run to pick up some things at her place, Debbie, who has been staying at Horvath's, tells Carl that she wants to be back in her own home and suggests he move in. When they walk in the house, they find Emmett, naked on the couch with a hot trick. With Horvath now moving in, Emmett wonders if it is time for him to move out. But when Horvath tells Emmett he's sorry to see him go and he'd like him to stay, Emmett reconsiders.
Ted has grown round since we last saw him. He's now sporting a gut! His friends try to tell him he's gotten fat but he doesn't seem to care. He thinks he looks great and so does the cutie that has been cruising him. Ted is horrified when he discovers the cutie is a chubby chaser.
Kinnetik has also grown, showing a healthy profit over the last quarter. Ted advises Brian to spend the profits on himself and buy something extravagant. Ted is surprised when Brian shows him the toy he's bought. Recently closed down by the IRS, Babylon now belongs to Brian. Michael and Ben may run from Liberty Avenue, but Brian refuses to let his world fall apart.

502

Now a proud club owner, Brian has re-opened Babylon. The lights go up and the thumpa-thumpa starts, but where are all the party boys? The fickle fags of Pittsburgh have moved on to another club. And Babylon isn't the only thing gone belly up. The studio pulled the plug on "Rage" and Justin has returned from Hollywood. Justin tells the gang that Hollywood was a disappointment, but alone with Brian he admits that it was fun and exciting. He knows Pittsburgh still has one thing Hollywood doesn't—Brian.
As Brian tries to revive the heart of Liberty Avenue, Michael says goodbye to it. He and Ben sign the papers for a new home away from Liberty Avenue. Now that Lindsay and Melanie have split up, Michael decides to pursue shared custody of their daughter. Thinking he can provide a more stable environment for her, Michael hires a lawyer and plans to get fifty percent custody. Lindsay, who is not a biological parent, fears that legally she can be completely left out. She asks Brian to talk to Michael to try and get him to back down. He does, but it only makes Michael angry that Brian chooses to defend Lindsay's position instead of his. It's clear that Michael and Brian have very different ideas of what being a gay adult means.
Debbie is offended when Michael dismisses the lesbians raising Jenny Rebecca as single mothers. She reminds Michael that a single mother raised him. Later, Debbie visits her granddaughter at Melanie's. She suggests that they all reconsider their selfish behavior and put the baby's needs first. Melanie misinterprets her conversation with Debbie and later tells Michael that his mother is on her side.
Emmett puts together the perfect wedding for a local news producer and his overly demanding bride-to-be. When she spills red wine on her wedding outfit, Emmett's fast thinking and fairy magic turns a potential disaster into a stunning work of art. Having witnessed Emmett's "queer" savvy, the news producer invites Emmett to host a segment offering the gay perspective. Emmett becomes Pittsburgh's new "Queer Guy".
Ted has recoiled from romance after his last boy toy turned out to be a chubby chaser. Determined to ignite a hot new look for himself, he bleaches his hair and adopts a "club" look. But he winds up looking like an old queen trying too hard to be young again. At the end of his self-esteem rope, Ted makes an appointment with a plastic surgeon.

503

As Brian reinforces his claim on Liberty Avenue, Michael and Ben settle into domestic bliss in their new home. To Michael, Liberty Avenue seems a million miles away-he's fighting with the girls for custody of his baby, he's angry with his mother for siding with Melanie, and feels even more estranged from Brian when he later finds out he paid for Lindsay's lawyer.
At Babylon, Brian is struggling to find a way to bring the boys back in. Justin tells him how it works in L.A.—keep them waiting outside and they'll all want in. Ted, trying to save Brian from his sinking ship, finds a buyer who wants to turn the club into a mini-mall. But rather than see Liberty Avenue gentrified (and turned straight), Brian hires a doorman and a mock crowd to gather in front of the club. His gamble pays off— the boys are lining up waiting to get in. Babylon is back.
Melanie and Lindsay continue to share time with Gus and Jenny Rebecca. Melanie suggests that Lindsay's participation in the custody battle—not being a biological parent—might be a hindrance. She asks Lindsay to step aside. Believing she's just as much a parent to Jenny Rebecca as Melanie or Michael, Lindsay asks Brian to help her get a lawyer. The situation gets complicated—and very ugly—when the three parents along with their lawyers meet to try and come to an agreement. Ultimately, the lawyers work out a schedule for all three parents to share custody of Jenny Rebecca.
Emmett is enthusiastic about his new job as Channel 5's new "Queer Guy". But after he meets the uptight and conservative news team, he reconsiders his flamboyance. In an effort to fit in, he tones down his look and his attitude. His first segment winds up a real dud and he's fired for not being queer enough! Offended at the judgment, Emmett returns to the station to show them just how queer he really is. He lets his flame burn bright and works his fairy magic performing a makeover on a stagehand. The news team loves it and he's rehired.
Debbie and Horvath, working different schedules, can't seem to find time for each other. Horvath suggests she quit her job at the diner and let someone take care of her for a change. But for Debbie Novotny, replacing herself at the diner proves nearly impossible. A timid, shy woman with no experience, Loretta Pye, wanders into the diner to apply for the job. After she explains that her abusive husband threw her out when he saw her kissing another woman, Debbie decides to give her a break. She coaches her through the "kill or be killed" world of waitressing, turning her into the 'new Debbie'. Debbie delivers her last pink plate special and after a surprise goodbye party from the gang, she retires.

504

On the heels of Melanie and Lindsay's break-up, Brian re-iterates to Justin his belief that marriage is the death of a relationship. His opinion is only confirmed after he attends a disastrous dinner with Michael and Ben and their new "PC" suburban friends. After Brian embarrasses Michael in his new home in front of his friends, Michael skips Brian's party at Babylon to for a night with his daughter. The gap between Michael and Brian grows wider.
The official custody papers arrive, detailing the three-way custody split of Jenny Rebecca. Melanie blames Lindsay's betrayal for having to split the baby's time into thirds. When it comes time to give J.R. to Michael, Lindsay tries to ease Melanie's pain by offering to leave Gus with her that night. But Melanie mistakes Lindsay's generosity for pity and refuses her offer.
Things are looking up for Hunter. His schoolwork is improving; he has made friends and is excelling on the swim team. His luck changes when a swim meet accident leaves him bleeding in the pool. In the bleachers, his friend Callie's parents panic and scream at the other students to get out of the pool because Hunter has AIDS.
Ted is taking the plastic surgery plunge. In fact, he's diving into the deep end with an extreme makeover. At the last minute, Ted has second thoughts, but Emmett persuades him to go ahead with it. He's never felt good about himself and now is his chance. Emmett is by his side all the way.
You can take Debbie out of Liberty Diner, but you can't take Liberty Diner out of Debbie. She's having a difficult time becoming the lady-who-lunches that Horvath wants her to be. She gives lunching at the diner a shot, but becomes depressed when she discovers Loretta has stolen her act—from the button-clad vest right down to the wisecracks. Emmett convinces her that it's time for her to pass that mantel on. She visits Loretta and offers her one of her famous T-shirts. But Loretta is leaving town. Her abusive husband has tracked her down. Deb promises her they'll fight him—together.

505

The carousel of custody continues to turn as Jenny Rebecca is passed from Melanie to Lindsay to Michael and back to Melanie. While Jenny Rebecca is with Michael, he and Ben leave her with Justin when they attend a meeting at Hunter's school. The baby develops a high fever and Justin rushes her to the hospital. Melanie seethes over the fact that Michael has left the baby he fought to have custody of with a babysitter! As Melanie and Michael argue in the hospital corridor, Lindsay realizes all three parents have only been thinking of themselves. Putting Jenny Rebecca first, Lindsay drops out of the custody battle.
Hunter has been dropped from the swim team since the accident in the pool. And to make matters worse, the kids at school avoid him after the revelation that he was once a hustler. The principal suggests Hunter may want to try a new school. Instead, Hunter considers returning to the streets.
A long line of queers wait to get into Babylon as Justin is escorted right through the crowd and up to Brian's lair-a swank, new, exclusive Babylon backroom replete with hot, naked courtiers. But Justin is not impressed. Later at the loft, Justin's attempt at making a home cooked meal is disrupted by Brian's admission that he has syphilis. He now must inform not only Justin, but also all former partners.
Loretta gives Debbie roses for standing up for her against her abusive ex-husband. And she wants to give Debbie a whole lot more-Loretta's fallen in love with her. On Emmett's advice, Debbie tries to show Loretta there are many appropriate women for her out there by taking her to a lesbian bar.
Emmett tries to coax Ted out of his dark apartment to reveal his post-operative "new and improved" self. Under duress and in disguise, Ted agrees to a visit to the local lesbian bar where one lesbian's come-on sends him running back to his cave. Emmett later works his "Queer Guy" magic on Ted and gives him the confidence to make his public debut.

506

The hottest new stud at Babylon is Brandon. Brian's sight is locked on target until Brandon deflects Brian's advances. Brian later spots him at a restaurant where once again, he resists the hot Kinney come-on. But Brian refuses to accept the brush-off because it would mean facing his advancing gay mortality.
Rage and J.T. are getting married and Ben and Michael announce the big news at their housewarming party. The readers love it, but Brian continues to think marriage is gays selling out to a heterosexual identity. Justin realizes that life will never imitate art and his dream of settling down with Brian may just remain a dream.
Michael and Ben are proud of how Hunter has handled the backlash at school. Showing parental support, Ben arrives at Hunter's debate only to find there isn't one and that Hunter hasn't been at school for a while. Ben tries to assure Hunter that he'll get through this—Ben has found a new school for him. But Hunter believes his past is going to follow him, no matter where he attends school. He's leaving town.
Emmett is a huge success as the Queer Guy for Channel 5 News. But Brian's claim that he's just another sexless fag for ratings leaves Emmett with second thoughts about his role. Knowing Brian's right, he does a segment that's a little too graphic for the news team. His producer tells him if he can't stick to cooking, flowers or turning straight guys into metrosexuals, his next segment will be live from the unemployment office.
Ted is now a hot stud—at least that's what the long list of recent tricks would say. His extreme makeover gave him extreme confidence and no man is out of his league. When a stud from his past, Troy—who gave him a "pity fuck" at Gay Pride—passes by, Ted grabs the opportunity for a little payback.
Debbie is in pain but no doctor can tell her what's wrong. At lunch at the diner with Melanie she's lethargic and miserable until she jumps in to help when she finds out they're short-staffed. Suddenly she is as good as new. Melanie suggests boredom is what has been ailing Debbie, so maybe it's time she went back to work. Although Carl wanted her to be a lady of leisure, she explains to him that she needs the diner—it's part of who she is.

507

Justin realizes Brian will never change and they simply both want different things. He decides to leave Brian and moves out of the loft. The split seems completely rational, but Brian's anger becomes apparent when he hears Justin is staying with Ben and Michael. He confronts Michael and accuses him of "infecting" Justin with his conformist life.
Family America, a conservative-based citizens' action group, has put Proposition 14 on the upcoming ballot. The proposition would dissolve any partnership contracts of same sex couples. Everyone stands to lose if this ballot measure passes.
Michael and Ben are having a hard time accepting Hunter's departure. Ben, consumed by Hunter's absence, feels that he's failed as a parent. Michael attempts to move on by becoming involved in the Anti-Prop 14 campaign. Ben doesn't want to fight for another gay cause. All he wants to do is find Hunter.
Ted is deeply enjoying his time with Troy. Emmett wants him to stick to the plan and cast Troy off, just as Troy did Ted at Gay Pride. Brian encourages Ted to keep riding the horse of revenge and have a good time. But Emmett pressures Ted when he realizes that Ted is falling for Troy.
Lindsay accepts her Mom's invitation to move back home. Melanie is absolutely against it, but it will save Lindsay money and it will be nice for her parents to get to know Gus. Because leaving Melanie must mean that Lindsay is no longer a lesbian, Mrs. Peterson tries to set Lindsay up with a man from her husband's office, completely invalidating the family Lindsay created over the past ten years. Realizing Melanie was right, she and Gus leave.
Brandon has everyone's attention at Babylon and little interest in Brian. Annoyed by his presence, Brian bans Brandon from the club. Brandon confronts him accusing Brian of being afraid Brandon will get all the hottest guys. Brian tells him he has to prove he's the best. They pick the ten hottest guys they can find and decide whoever fucks all of them first, wins. If Brandon wins, he gets back into Babylon. If Brian wins, he gets into Brandon.

508

Brian and Brandon work their way down the list of the ten hottest guys in their "Fuck-Off" to determine the real stud of Babylon. Names get crossed off each list, and it seems Brandon has the advantage when the last guy on Brian's list is leaving for Puerto Vallarta. Not about to abdicate the throne, Brian Kinney flies to Mexico and back, initiating trick #10 into the Mile-High club.
Michael gives Justin Hunter's bed for his new studio apartment. When Ben discovers this he confronts Michael for not having faith Hunter will return. Michael argues Ben is just in denial-Hunter is not coming back. Debbie tells Michael he needs to let Ben grieve in his own way.
Melanie and Lindsay are trying an in-house separation. They'll share the house, but lead separate lives. It's going smoothly—until Lindsay witnesses Melanie kissing a date goodnight. Lindsay admits she'd secretly hoped living together would reunite them as a couple.
Justin discovers his father is on a list of major contributors to the anti-gay Proposition 14 campaign and plans a boycott of Taylor Electronics. Justin confronts his father during a protest outside the store, but when he refuses to move off the property, Justin's dad has him arrested.
Emmett is convinced he has a stalker. But when the mysterious man reveals himself, Emmett's relieved to learn it's Drew Boyd. Drew explains he's being blackmailed by a former trick and needs Emmett's support. Emmett tells him it will never end until he can be true to himself and come out. But the blackmailer beats him to it, selling his story to the tabloids. Drew is publicly outed.

509

When Michael discovers a brick has been thrown through the window of his store, he fears he's been a target of hate crime. At home he removes the "Stop Prop 14" sign Ben had placed on their lawn but later realizes the fight for gay rights is too important to back down.
No longer on speaking terms, Brian sees Michael as a "defector" to the straight world of house and husband, and Michael will not tolerate Brian's disrespect. Debbie can't stand their silence any longer and persuades Brian to make amends but Michael would rather just admit that the "Brian and Mikey Show" is finally over.
In an effort to carry on with their individual lives, Lindsay invites Melanie and the woman she's been dating to the 'Emerging Artists Show' at the gallery. A civil façade at the show opening gives way to passionate emotion when Melanie finally gets home.
At the 'Emerging Artists Show', Justin's work is the main attraction. The gang has come out in support, as have Jennifer and her new boyfriend—a man half her age. Justin is appalled that his mother is dating someone who could be her son and Jennifer is disappointed he isn't more understanding after his relationship with Brian.
Emmett feels like a hypocrite. While he's encouraged Drew to face his accusers and proudly come out to the world, he's allowed his Channel 5 employers to portray him as a sex-less eunuch. Both issues are resolved when Drew unexpectedly comes out on a Channel 5 sports show. When Drew can't convince the interviewer that he's gay, he proves it by giving Emmett a deep kiss on live TV. While Emmett is happy to lose his job with pride, Drew is stunned by a suspension from his team.
Since Ted's Extreme Make-Over, he's had most of Pittsburgh's finest but now he's looking to settle down. Melanie recommends finding a nice Jewish guy, so he does, at a mixer in Woody's. Things move along very quickly—until the man undoes Ted's zipper. Turns out they were both looking to settle down with a nice Jewish guy, and Ted doesn't quite 'make the cut'.

510

With the Stop Prop 14 Benefit set for Thursday, it comes as a shock when Michael, Ben, Melanie and Emmett are told they've lost the venue for the event. The sudden change is attributed to the upcoming vote on the anti-gay legislation, which has also resulted in hate mongers visiting Liberty Avenue. No one wants the backlash of hosting a gay event. After exhausting all other location options, Ben asks Michael if Brian could host the event at Babylon. Ultimately, Michael, who still isn't talking to Brian, asks him for the use of the club, and Brian surprises him by saying yes. But while the gang fights for gay rights, Brian plans to be in Sydney, Australia enjoying Gay Mardi Gras.
Lindsay and Melanie continue to abide by the rules of their in-house separation, despite their recent passionate encounter. Melanie deems it an "error in judgment", and goes on another date with Corinne. But Corinne doesn't enjoy spending the evening listening to Lindsay stories, and Melanie is forced to admit that she's still in love with Lindsay. Before she can find out if Lindsay feels the same way, Lindsay puts the house up for sale.
Emmett asks Drew to speak at the benefit but the answer is no. Still suspended from the team, and dropped by Brown Athletics from their ad campaign, Drew is in no mood to be a 'poster boy' for the community. He tells Emmett to go without him.
Crowds of supporters fill Babylon for the 'Stop Prop 14' Benefit. Still searching for Mr. Right, Ted arrives with the latest candidate, a somewhat agoraphobic Lewis. Emmett introduces CYNDI LAUPER-the star attraction, and the party is just kicking into gear when a bomb explodes.
Brian hears news of the explosion on his way to the airport and he races to Babylon. Through the maze of injured and fire trucks, ambulances and police cars, Brian searches for Justin, whom he finds safe and sound. Then he hears about Michael. Brian gets to the ambulance just as they're loading Michael's unconscious, severely injured body on board. At the hospital, Ben and Debbie pray for Michael's safety as Michael is prepped for surgery.
Drew arrives at the bombed-out Babylon as Lewis flees. He hated crowds before. Now, he may never leave the house again, and he blames Ted for inviting him. Melanie and Lindsay were running just late enough to be outside Babylon for the explosion. Thus unscathed, they eventually return home after an arduous, emotionally exhausting night. When Lindsay starts toward her attic bedroom, Melanie asks her not to go. They lay together in bed with their children, once again a family.
After going to the hospital Brian returns to Babylon to find Justin once again. He confesses to him that when he heard of the explosion, despite their break-up, all Brian could think of was Justin. Amidst the rubble, Brian holds Justin close, whispers the words he's never said: "I love you".

511

Brian dreams of his own funeral—he's haunted by the bombing of Babylon. Armed with new priorities, he stuns Justin with a marriage proposal. Though he appreciates the offer, Justin politely declines, knowing that the man who's decried all "defectors" to the straight world of marriage will eventually return to his senses.
Michael recovers from his injuries in the hospital. Not only are Ben and Debbie there when he first awakes, but Hunter as well! He had heard about the bombing and when he couldn't reach anyone he called Eli and Monty. Later, Debbie correctly guesses that Hunter hasn't merely come back to 'check in', but that he hopes he may be asked to stay. Ted, however, has been unable to visit. Because he had asked Michael to go to the bar—where the bomb was planted—Ted feels responsible.
Emmett feels the effects of the bomb emotionally. Paralyzed with a feeling of helplessness, he's unable to leave the house. Horvath identifies Emmett's post-traumatic stress disorder and convinces him to attend the vigil being held for the victims of the bombing. At the vigil, Ben's pacifist beliefs are tested by Right-Wing Christian demonstrators who declare that those injured in the bombing got what they deserved for supporting evil lifestyles. When their Reverend leader shouts that Michael should have died, Ben punches him in the face and a riot ensues. Brian pulls Ben away from the scene as police arrive, and Emmett gains new confidence fighting alongside Drew.
Ted skips the vigil and instead looks for comfort at the Liberty Baths. He seeks penance for what he believes he did to Michael, and finds it in the form of a heavily muscled, rough-looking daddy. Afterwards, he's finally able to visit Michael—who's thrilled to see him.
Melanie and Lindsay are devastated to hear that their friend Dusty died in the explosion. After the funeral, Melanie confides that she felt like she was saying goodbye to more than just Dusty. She was also letting go of the belief that her family was safe in Pittsburgh.
Justin has off-handedly told Brian that he's content to stay in his tiny studio apartment until he moves into the country manor of his dreams. Later, Brian takes Justin for a drive, to a beautiful English-style country house complete with tennis courts and stable. When Justin asks who lives there, Brian answers, "We do". Brian's selling Babylon and the loft, and buying the house of Justin's dreams, all to prove he's serious about getting married. Justin reconsiders Brian's proposal—and accepts.

512

Brian and Justin "celebrate their engagement" in every part of the loft. Ted, Debbie, Emmett, Melanie, Lindsay and well, all of Pittsburgh, are shocked. Michael, on the other hand, is livid. After all the criticism he's taken from Brian for 'defecting' to the straight world of husbands and children, he sees Brian's wedding as hypocritical and insulting. Though he had intended not to, Ben is compelled to tell Michael that at the hospital while Michael lay unconscious, Brian flew into a rage at the doctors who wouldn't take his blood for Michael's transfusion. Michael softens at this news, and finally goes to make amends. They reconcile, and Brian asks Michael to be his best man.
Melanie and Lindsay have decided to move to Canada—to raise Gus and Jenny Rebecca in a country where they won't be humiliated because of their parents' sexual orientation. However, they won't go without the fathers' blessings. Predictably, Brian appears to be fine with whatever Gus' parents decide. Michael, on the other hand, needs time to consider the idea. Before the four parents meet again, Michael hears every side of the issue debated over dinner at Debbie's house. Meanwhile, Justin calls Brian on his feigned disinterest. Brian may have never felt his father's love, but that doesn't mean he doesn't love Gus. At their second meeting, Melanie and Lindsay are delighted to receive Michael's permission to raise Jenny Rebecca wherever they'll feel safest. Brian, however, says they can go anywhere they want, but Gus will stay in Pittsburgh. Lindsay meets with Brian privately to assure him that wherever they go, Gus will know his father. Brian tells her it's not only his son he's losing—he will miss Lindsay, too.
Justin has no intention of leaving Brian, even when Lindsay shows him the rave review of his work in Artforum magazine. She explains that it's the perfect first step to conquering the New York art scene. But to Justin, New York isn't the opportunity of a lifetime, Brian is. Brian takes notice of the review as well and tells Justin he doesn't want to hold him back. But Justin counters that he's had his dreams dashed by empty promises before and he knows what he wants—a life with the only one who's never broken a promise—Brian.
After losing five games in a row, the Pittsburgh Ironmen reinstate their star quarterback, Drew —and win the game. Emmett takes Drew out to Popperz to celebrate but his mood sours when he catches Drew making out with a 'Hot Popper'. Debbie convinces Emmett to be more understanding—after all, Drew is only "seventeen". That is, he's freshly out, and a whole world of opportunities he'd always denied himself is suddenly available. Emmett gives Drew the freedom to explore that world.
Ted isn't looking for freedom. He's looking for commitment, and believes he may have found it in Tad. Ted and Tad met recently, and quickly fell madly in love. In order to show just how much Ted means to him, Tad's taking him to Mt. Flame for a romantic birthday ski-getaway. It means canceling his plans with the rest of the gang, but Ted agrees to Tad's plan.Hunter's bussing tables at the Liberty Diner, happy to be anywhere other than his high school. He dreads going back until he witnesses Drew face down a few homophobic teammates after his big win. Inspired by Drew, Hunter turns in his apron and returns to school.

513

Who could have guessed how much things would change? Babylon is a bombed-out memory. Melanie and Lindsay are moving to Canada. Ted has finally found true love. And the most astonishing of all, Brian and Justin are getting married. Brian wants to give Justin everything he ever wanted, and he's virtually become a new man. At his stag party, Justin tries to send Brian off to the corner with a stripper, but Brian declines-has he been tamed? Too bad Justin loved him because he was wild.
Michael, on the other hand, is being sought out for his tame image. The Committee for Human Rights is holding a press conference to speak out against Proposition 14, and they want Michael to speak at the event. Not only is he a survivor of the bombing at Babylon, but he is also an example of a gay man whose world is not so different from the straight world. The Committee hopes to attract straight votes by showing them that many gays have families, homes and committed partners just like them. At the event, Michael watches as his flamboyant mother Debbie, and a host of her drag queen friends are politely ushered to the back, "out of camera range". He rejects his prepared speech and instead speaks from the heart. The truth is, the gay community is different from the straight community. However, every American, no matter how they choose to live their life, is entitled to the same rights.
Ted and Tad seem to have the perfect loving relationship until Brian's stag. After watching Ted chat with a bartender and then to his best friend Emmett, Tad blows up in an ugly fit of jealousy. Later, when Tad tries to pretend it never happened, Ted has to forcibly remove Tad from his apartment and his life.
At the loft after the stag, it's the last straw for Justin when Brian tells him he would rather 'just cuddle'. Brian Kinney does not cuddle. Justin declares that he doesn't want Brian if it means sacrificing who he is and Brian feels the same way. He doesn't want Justin to sacrifice the art career waiting for him in New York by staying in Pittsburgh with him. Sacrifice does not equal love. When everyone is gathered for their rehearsal dinner, Brian and Justin announce that the wedding is off.
Lindsay and Melanie finish packing for their move to Canada. Though they'll always cherish their memories from Pittsburgh, they're looking forward to raising their family in a country that respects their lifestyle. Michael and Ben want to legally adopt Hunter while they still can. They present Hunter with a journal bearing his new initials: "H.N.B." - Hunter Novotny-Bruckner.
Ted takes Emmett on the ski trip he'd booked with Tad. Finally, Ted has resolved to end his desperate search for a partner. He's decided to enjoy his life, regardless of whether or not he has someone to share it with. Enter Blake. Ted's former lover happens to be staying at the same chalet, alone. As he and Ted go off to share a drink, Emmett too runs in to a man from the past. Back in Hazelhurst, Calvin Culpepper was the hottest guy on the high school swim team. He's come out since then, and he'd love to catch up with Emmett.
As Justin prepares to leave for New York, he finds the wedding rings Brian hasn't returned. Justin declares that they don't need rings or vows to prove they love each other. They already know that. Brian's proud of Justin for becoming the best homosexual he could possibly be! They make love for the last time.
Brian is alone in the loft when Michael arrives and insists they go to Babylon. It may be a bombed out shadow of its former self, but they need to dance. Michael, despite his domestication, recognizes that Babylon is "who we are … what made us". As he and Brian dance among the rubble, music begins to play. Colored lights sweep the room, glitter falls, and shirtless, gorgeous Babylonians fill the dance floor. The thumpa-thumpa continues. It always will. No matter what happens or who is President. As Our Lady of Disco, the Divine Miss Gloria Gaynor has always sung to us: "We Will Survive".
